Poland should 'begin work' on nuclear defenses, Nawrocki says

Source: Politico (EU)

Polish President Karol Nawrocki thinks his country should start developing nuclear defenses, given the threat from Moscow.

In an interview with Polsat television on Sunday, Nawrocki described himself as "a great supporter of Poland joining the nuclear project" and argued that the country should develop its security strategy "based on nuclear potential."

He added: "This path, with respect for all international regulations, is the path we should take. ... We must work towards this goal so that we can begin the work. We are a country right on the border of an armed conflict. The aggressive, imperial attitude of Russia toward Poland is well known."

His comments come amid a growing debate in several European countries about developing their own nuclear weapons in the light of growing threats from Moscow and an erosion of trust in the United States.

2. I'm no expert but I feel like it'd be surprising if the EU let Poland build a nuclear stockpile

Some kind of missile defense shield might be another story, if they could afford it, but I don't think the EU will bless Poland building nukes of their own. It would be seen as highly provocative towards Moscow I'd think. Again no expert at all but that idea feels unlikely unless maybe they host some small contingent of weapons from an EU ally, like France, maybe?

3. Last I checked, Poland is a sovereign nation

that has a right to decide it's national defense policy, without interference from France, the EU or the genocidal KGB/FSB agents in the kremlin. If anything is highly provocative, it's Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine. Could it be that's why Poland is thinking about nukes? Hmmmm. I would guess by studying their histories, that both Poland and Ukraine have had enough of any country invading their borders.

Personally, I'm against nukes. But bloodthirsty Putin and his henchmen are pushing the world into a massive military buildup.

4. I think you're mistaking the point of my post which was not "Poland has no right to do it"

However:

Poland is a signatory to the Nuclear Non‑Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which bars it from developing its own nuclear weapons; any move toward a national arsenal would collide with that regime and trigger massive pushback from EU partners and the US.

Sovereignty is still subject to treaties. Also all EU-member nations have given up varying degrees of their "sovereignty" in order to be part of the collective. Also, Iran is also a sovereign nation, but the world seems to have decided they're not going along with their building nukes.

And I certainly was not meaning to imply Russia being dickheads is not the provocation leading to Poland considering this option, because they definitely are. Fuck Russia, Fuck Putin!!!

I guess we'll see what happens AFA what kind of political pressure the world (the EU in particular) brings to bear against Poland developing nukes, but one thing I bet the EU considers is that Poland putting a bunch of nukes on their territory *right next* to Russia means that if it fell to Russia? Russia would then take over a bunch of nukes that are also really close to a lot of the rest of the EU
