ICE confirms a measles outbreak in the nation's largest detention facility in Texas

Source: NBC News

March 4, 2026, 2:15 PM EST

At least 14 cases of measles have been confirmed at the nation’s largest ICE detention facility, an agency spokesperson told NBC News in a statement.

People who tested positive for the highly contagious disease at Camp East Montana in El Paso, Texas, have been “cohorted and separated from the rest of the detained population to prevent further spread,” the spokesperson said.

The agency “is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with public health authorities to ensure appropriate medical care and containment measures are in place — the health and safety of detainees, staff, and the community remain a top priority,” the spokesperson added.

Rep. Veronica Escobar, D-Texas, whose El Paso district includes the detention center located on the Fort Bliss Army base, said the facility is closed to visitors and attorneys because of the outbreak. In addition to the 14 people who got sick, 112 other individuals have been isolated in connection to the outbreak, according to Escobar. “There has been nothing but crisis after crisis inside the walls of this tent city," the Democratic congresswoman said in a statement.

Here is an overview of the diseases and conditions found in concentration camps:
Major Infectious Diseases

Epidemic Typhus: The most common and deadly infectious disease in camps like Auschwitz-Birkenau and Bergen-Belsen, spread by body lice.

Dysentery and Infectious Diarrhea: Caused by contaminated water, poor hygiene, and spoiled food, this was widespread, with some, like Dr. Johann Paul Kremer, referring to it as the "Auschwitz disease".

Tuberculosis (TB): Due to overcrowding and weakened immune systems, TB was rampant. In 1944, TB patients filled multiple barracks in the Auschwitz men's hospital.

Malaria: Prevalent in certain camps, often spread by mosquitoes in unsanitary environments.

Typhoid and Paratyphoid Fever: Spread through contaminated water and food.

Noma (Cancrum Oris): A rapid, gangrenous disease affecting the face, which appeared among malnourished children in the Gypsy section of Auschwitz.

Scabies and Skin Infections: Extremely common due to filth, lice, and lack of washing, often resulting in purulent skin diseases. (Auschwitz-Birkenau)

Diseases Caused by Malnutrition and Exposure

Starvation Diarrhea (Durchfall): Often more fatal than typhus, this was a direct result of extreme malnutrition.

Vitamin Deficiencies: Caused conditions like beri-beri (vitamin B1 deficiency), pellagra (niacin deficiency), scurvy (vitamin C deficiency), and rickets.

"Hunger Oedema": Severe swelling of the legs and body due to protein deficiency.
Frostbite and Gangrene: Resulting from inadequate clothing and exposure to cold.

The detention center project

The Acquisition Logistics Company was one of 13 companies to submit bids for the project online. The project’s estimated completion date is September 2027. The project has made national news for its size and scope.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the contract was previously awarded to a different company, then rescinded. The prior company was not listed.

According to the El Paso Times, the project is set to be the largest of its kind in the United States, with an expected capacity of 5,000 beds. The project comes just weeks after a migrant detention facility opened in the Florida Everglades at the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport. The project has a capacity of 3,000 with a push to increase the number of beds to 5,000 in the coming months. The cost to maintain it is estimated at $450 million..............

...............
The Acquisition Logistics Company has received $48.2 million in federal contract and grant funding since its founding, according to GovTribe. The majority of its funding has come from DOD contracts. This will be the company’s largest federal contract, and about 442 times larger than the size of its last published contract.................
