Federal Judge Approves Trump Effort to Obtain List of Jews From Penn

Source: New York Times

March 31, 2026 Updated 3:41 p.m. ET

The Trump administration was within its rights to demand that the University of Pennsylvania turn over information about Jews on campus as part of a federal investigation into discrimination at the school, a federal judge decided Tuesday. The government’s investigation had unified Penn leaders with Jewish students and faculty in opposition to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s subpoena. Many on campus drew parallels between the government’s approach and methods deployed in Nazi Germany.

But the Trump administration has said that its request was typical for discrimination investigations, and Judge Gerald J. Pappert of Philadelphia’s Federal District Court agreed on Tuesday. He gave Penn until May 1 to comply with the administration’s subpoena, though the ruling appeared unlikely to quell the debates around how the administration has pressured top American universities.

In a 32-page ruling, Judge Pappert, an Obama appointee, wrote that Penn’s constitutional claims were “easily dispensed with” and that the government’s subpoena was valid. “Though ineptly worded, the request had an understandable purpose — to obtain in a narrowly tailored way, as opposed to seeking information on all university employees, information on individuals in Penn’s Jewish community who could have experienced or witnessed antisemitism in the workplace,” he wrote.

The judge, however, said that the university would not have to reveal any employee’s connection to “a specific Jewish-related organization.” Penn did not immediately comment.

Federal Judge Approves Trump Effort to Extract List of Jews From Penn

March 31, 2026, 2:53 p.m. ET

The Trump administration was within its rights to demand that the University of Pennsylvania turn over information about Jewish people on campus as part of a federal investigation into discrimination at the school, a federal judge decided Tuesday.

The ruling clears a hurdle for the Trump administration as it targets elite schools over accusations of antisemitism. Judge Gerald J. Pappert of the U.S. District Court in Philadelphia issued the decision, which largely sided with the government, writing that Penn's "constitutional claims are easily dispensed with."

He gave Penn until May 1 to comply with the subpoena, though he said that the university would not have to reveal any employee's connection to a specific Jewish-related organization. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has been pursuing an inquiry into potential workplace discrimination against Jewish faculty and staff at Penn, an Ivy League school in Philadelphia, since 2023.

While university officials said they welcomed the investigation, they balked last year after the government issued a subpoena seeking names and phone numbers for members of Jewish groups on campus. The school said much of the information that the government had requested is not collected. Students and faculty groups also condemned the government's demand for a list of Jews, drawing a parallel to methods deployed in Nazi Germany.

4. Jews Begin to Wonder: Is Anywhere Safe?
Tue Mar 31, 2026, 03:48 PM

Earlier this month, Guy Wolf, the president of the Jewish Cultural Centre in Liège, Belgium, awoke to alarming news: overnight, an IED was detonated outside his local synagogue, blowing out the windows and setting the front doors and nearby cars alight.

The attack on the historic temple was the first such incident in the city since the Holocaust, according to local officials. Though Wolf had heard about a rise in antisemitic attacks in other cities, he was taken aback that it happened in Liège. There are only about 500 Jewish people in this city of half a million, the synagogue isn’t particularly active and the Jews are well-integrated. “If you attack the Jewish community here,” Wolf said, “you are attacking the city of Liège, because we are completely inside of it.”

The whole thing has left the 68-year-old Wolf wondering: If Jews can’t feel safe here, can they feel safe anywhere?

This is an increasingly urgent question for Jewish communities as antisemitism rises across the globe, and particularly in the West where Jews have lived in relative peace since the end of World War II. But a spasm of antisemitic violence and hostile rhetoric stemming from conflicts in the Middle East is making many Jews feel increasingly isolated from their homelands and their neighbors.

From "IBM and the Holocaust"

For example, at Alexanderplatz in Berlin, just down the street from the Prussian Statistical Office complex, Brown Shirts invaded a restaurant popular with Jewish businessmen. Waving a list of names of the restaurant's Jewish customers, the Brown Shirts "formed a double line to the restaurant door." They called each Jew out by name and made him run a gauntlet. As a Jew passed, each Storm Trooper "smashed him in the face and kicked him with heavy boots, until finally the last in the line, knocked him into the street." The last Jew to run the gauntlet was beaten so severely, "his face resembled a beefsteak," the newspaper reported.

Sure, there were Jewish students and (I assume) faculty, but it just didn't seem to matter a whole hell of a lot at the time. There were organizations catering to various religious sects, but I don't recall having taken any notice. The main coffee house where the campus folk musicians gathered was in the basement of the Christian Association. It might just as well have been in the basement of the Wiccan Association for all the people knew. There were substantial numbers of Turkish and Iranian students (this was 1970-1975, so pre-Ayatollah domination), and none of the women wore head coverings. The University itself probably had records of the home countries of the students, as they did of the non-foreign students, but so what? In one of the grad dorms, they had paired an Israeli student as the roommate of a Palestinian student, and they were best of friends.

I haven't been back there since, but I can't imagine that either the students or the faculty wish to be involved in any kind of outside required distinction. No one goes to Penn looking fight someone else's proxy wars.

West Philly was horribly run down. I lived there long enough (5 years). I do have some fond memories of playing at the Civic Center, but even that was a relic.

Do the noxious fumes from the refineries on the river still make the air there a challenge to breathe? We could see the big red neon letters atop the Philadelphia Savings Fund Society (PSFS) every evening glowing ominously. In West Philly, we all knew what PSFS really stood for: Philadelphia Smells Funny Sometimes.

That site (which used to be the Sunoco and American Petrolium refineries) is being repurposed for other uses now after the cleanup.

I think what is left for refineries are now near Marcus Hook outside of the city along the Delaware River.

And when I was a kid, I used to have a PSFS savings account and even had a few stints as a "banker" when they would bring the little machines into the school once a month for kids to deposit and the deposits were registered in passbooks like the below!

The building is designated historic as one of the first "modern style" skyscrapers (built in 1932) and the bank itself was the nation's first (consumer) savings bank back in 1816, so it would have had its 210th anniversary this year (but it was merged into other banks years ago). The building is a hotel now (but the sign is designated historic so is still there) -

With this administration, what they say for the courts and what they do are usually totally different. Will they demand lists of all minorities and women to ensure that universities are hiring and admitting white men first? This is about forcing universities to kowtow to Trump.

Already citizens in many areas attacked by ICE are having to carry proof of citizenship. How long before the police state expands to every area? Trump still has over two years to destroy democracy.
