US will start revoking passports for thousands of parents who owe child support, AP learns

Source: AP

...
The department told The Associated Press on Thursday that the revocations would begin Friday and be focused on those who owe $100,000 or more. That would apply to about 2,700 American passport holders, according to figures supplied to the State Department by the Department of Health and Human Services.

The revocation program, plans for which were first reported by the AP in February, soon will be greatly expanded to cover parents who owe more than $2,500 in unpaid child support — the threshold set by a little-enforced 1996 law, the State Department said.

It was not clear on Thursday how many passport holders owe more than $2,500 because HHS is still collecting data from state agencies that track the figures, but it could encompass many more thousands of people, officials said.

And yes, what a litany of excuses could be used to go after ANY of us--even a "supposed erroneous" claim based on an IRS "error" (not), a claim on a document that is only 99.9% true, or false accusations of someone they pay to testify against you?

If Uncle Sam gets the delinquents to pay, where does the money do? I would HOPE that the children (or their mothers) would get it, but who knows what this administration would do ....

Ever had a mistake by IRS made on your return (or heaven forbid, audit)? It happens in good administrations. It may well happen more in corrupt administrations and if your job requires international travel--well too damned bad, I guess.

6. I don't really have a problem with this as long as there is an appeals process

I’m surprised the administration cares enough about child support delinquency.

The problem I have is I doubt it would be enforced fairly.

If you have enough money to go traveling all over the world you should be paying to take care of your kids.

There are many other things to be pissed about. This doesn't meet the threshold.
