New Reform councillor suspended after racist posts emerge

A newly elected Reform UK councillor has been suspended from the party after making comments suggesting that Nigerians should be melted down and used to fill potholes.
According to campaign group Hope Not Hate, Glenn Gibbins, who was elected as a Reform councillor in Sunderland at the local elections, complained on social media in 2024 about the amount of Nigerians in town. The comments have since been deleted.
Richard Tice, the Reform deputy leader, on Sunday refused to directly criticise Gibbins and accused the media of smearing the party.
Asked whether he was happy for someone with those views to represent the party, Tice told the BBCs Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg programme: This weekend we are celebrating our incredible successes. Like any party, we have internal party processes to look where people have said or done the wrong thing.
