Trump threatens to impose sweeping new tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China on first day in office

NEW YORK (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump threatened on Monday to impose sweeping new tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China as soon as he takes office as part of his effort to crack down on illegal immigration and drugs. He said he would impose a 25% tax on all products entering the country from Canada and Mexico, and an additional 10% tariff on goods from China, as one of his first executive orders.

The tariffs, if implemented, could dramatically raise prices for American consumers on everything from gas to automobiles to agricultural products. The U.S. is the largest importer of goods in the world, with Mexico, China and Canada its top three suppliers, according to the most recent U.S. Census data.

Trump made the threats in a pair of posts on his Truth Social site in which he railed against an influx of illegal migrants, even though southern border apprehensions have been hovering near four-year lows.

"Trump’s proposed tariffs could have major economic implications, potentially raising costs for American consumers while addressing immigration and trade concerns. It’s a bold move that may spark significant debate.

consumerism. Many corporations and businesses have moved their operations out of the U.S. and thus, their products need to be "imported" back. If you want to buy a refrigerator, it won't be made in Omaha, Nebraska. Likely from China or Mexico.

With tariffs making products prohibitively expensive, consumers stop buying. The economy slows down. Jobs are lost. Corporations lose profits. Everyone's unhappy.

How long will this last?

Then, they will relocate to another country that falls for their schtick and the process starts all over again.

Like termites, they will slowly eat away at any country that they can to achieve the impossible goal of getting all the money. The fact that they think they can achieve this is part of why we are where we are as a nation and as a planet.

The fact that this crap is still being preached as possible just shows how far we have to go to remove delusion from our reality. Because some people don't seem to be able to tell the difference.

We have a lot of family in Canada. Yesterday my mother phoned back my cousin who lives in Calgary. She was like "Have you people lost your mind?" (This was before news of the tariffs broke). She's real sweet, though. She has offered to "vouch" for us if we want to move there.

Canada is the US without the Bible Belt, tRump or MAGA.

Do you think your cousin could vouch for my wife and me as well?

All kidding aside, we live in a northern border state and are seriously considering a move north and hiring a Canadian immigration attorney.

All we see before us is a police state that will implode into total chaos.

Hoping the Canadians will take pity on us and allow us to escape Gilead!

Justice matters.

I would recommend Ontario, like Toronto's suburbs, instead of Alberta or Saskatchewan...

Poilievre's base is expanding to Ontario's south west counties around Windsor though, sadly. Conservatives are way ahead in polls to take the federal Parliament next election... Trudeau is heading toward a wipe out, tragically.

Not only will the US consumers have to pay more, and thus will purchase less, in countries that have these tariffs imposed on their goods will have less demand for said goods, thus bringing down their economy.
In the kind of consumer capitalist society of today, tariffs can bring down the economy worldwide.
I don't hear this mentioned.

That will raise prices and disrupt trade (company profits). Higher prices and more layoffs will follow. Budget deficits will explode, interest rates will go up and tax revenues will fall further. Yield curves are already inverted indicating a recession (or worse). And the ONLY way to decrease prices is to slow the economy (recession).

Trump is an idiot. Everything he touches turns into a turd. We all know it, now the other half of the country needs a demonstration.

Keep your debts down folks and hang on.

For all those ignorant uninformed morons out there who voted for this clown and against Harris here comes tRumpnomics. If they were all worked up about inflation and grocery prices under Biden they're really going to love it after these tariffs go into place.

It is too bad that the MSM did not pound away at the fact that foreign countries do not pay the tariffs and that the American consumer does because many of these idiots believed tRump when he kept saying this would come out of the pockets of the exporting nations.

This will definitely derail consumer spending causing the economy to tank and if Musk and Ramaswamy (who are clueless when it comes to fiscal economics) simultaneously cut government spending by billions if not trillions of dollars the coming recession will turn into a full blown depression.

Add to this, tariffs are not done in a vacuum - China, Canada and Mexico will in all probability respond with tariffs on American goods and services and that very likely will tank the entire world economy.

This clown is being handed an economy that is running like a Ferrari. By the time he and his surrounding cast of idiots are done the US economy is going to look like a broken down Yugo.

The cost of ignorance is going to drag us all down.

Well known fact, but not to some it seems.

I'm thinking tariffs can be avoided or the effects reduced by China and others by hyping up local consumption and looking more closely at the other countries they export to.
Maybe dropping prices there while cutting back on exports to America.

Whatever.

Going to destabilize the global economy, for sure.

But it's a cyclic thing.
Dems do responsible government, voters expected more, Repugs make unrealistic promises, the electorate eat the BS, and vote them in.
The Repugs then stuff up and make things worse, so voters bring back Dems who do their best to fix things.

The plaintive cries of 'But Trump promised us!' will echo around the country for the next 4 years.
