Angela Merkel's new memoir details Vladimir Putin's power games and Donald Trump's antics

When Angela Merkel met Donald Trump at the White House in 2017, he avoided shaking her hand for photographers – even after she whispered to him that they should.

"As soon as I said that, I shook my head inwardly at myself," the former German chancellor writes in her 720-page memoir.

In her new memoir, titled Freedom, she takes aim at Russian President Vladimir Putin's "power games" and US president-elect Donald Trump's fascination with authoritarian leaders.

Ms Merkel reveals that she sought advice from Pope Francis on how to deal with Trump when he was first elected US president.

Angela Merkel, whether you agree with all her politics or not, was one of the most able and respected European leaders of her generation.

That Trump was so off the rails that Angela Merkel felt compelled to confer with the fucking Pope for suggestions on dealing with him is certainly an indication of just how much of a fucking idiot our past and future president is.

As bad as things are going to be domestically, what keeps me up at night is what a dangerous shit show this group is going to be on the international stage. I'm not sure how our traditional allies are going to be able to cope with this renewed assault on the post WWII system. What do you do when the major player in your alliance has repudiated your aims and your values?
