Opinion : Wisconsin at the center of the pushback against oligarchy

By John Nichols
Feb 25, 2025

When U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders appeared in Iowa City over the weekend — before huge crowds of people who had come out to oppose efforts by President Donald Trump and Elon Musk to gut federal programs while engineering massive tax cuts for the billionaire class — he provided a crash course in how oligarchs flex their muscles.

To make his point, the independent senator from Vermont highlighted Musk’s intervention in the race for an open seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

Sanders began by reading from a Bloomberg News article on the massive uptick in Musk’s wealth since last November’s election, when the candidate supported by the world’s richest man was elected and then signaled that Musk would play an influential — arguably definitional — role in the new administration.

Dane County Judge Susan Crawford, who is backed by advocates for fair elections, unions and abortion rights, is running for the seat against former Republican Attorney General Brad Schimel, an ally of anti-labor former Gov. Scott Walker and corporate interests.
