Chief Justice John Roberts recently reprimanded Donald Trump for his irresponsible behavior. That's like a parent scolding their 10-year-old son for reckless driving after tossing him the car keys.
So, what am I accusing Roberts of?
Of doing more than just about anyone else in clearing the road for Trump's rise to power and his illegal actions once in the White House. The bill of particulars could be much longer, but let's just look at four counts.
First, there's the Supreme Court's 2010 decision in Citizens United v. Federal Elections Committee. In that case, Roberts cast the deciding vote to reverse a century of precedent by authorizing corporations, other outside groups and wealthy donors to spend unlimited sums on elections. Just days after the decision, President Barack Obama warned the decision "will open the floodgates for special interests — including foreign corporations — to spend without limit in our elections." Unlimited contributions have indeed tilted the American electoral process toward the interests of corporations and the rich. Today, the largest contributor to Trump's 2024 campaign, Elon Musk, is playing an unprecedented role in the current administration.
Second, in 2013, Roberts assigned himself to write the majority opinion in Shelby County v. Holder, which threw out a key section of the Voting Rights Act. A 2024 article in the Journal of Political Economy found evidence that the Shelby County holding decreased turnout of minority voters due to "voter suppression tactics that have occurred in the absence of federal oversight." As two professors wrote in an American Economic Association paper: "Our findings suggest that perhaps Chief Justice Roberts should be slightly less optimistic about the state of democratic equality in the South."

(20,013 posts)This article is a very good summary of the most awful things Roberts has done to enable Schlump, and I thank you for sharing it. But omg, the title scared the hell out of me for a moment there!
When I saw the words "Chief Justice Roberts Hands Trump the Keys to Power," my first thought was "Oh no, what has Roberts done NOW?" Then I read the article and felt just a teeny bit better ... for now. The article is scary, but at least it's stuff I already knew about, and not a brand new piece of horrifying news.
I had never thought about the progression before, from Citizens United through Shelby County v. Holder and the Colorado case to United States v. Trump, and now I see how it all fits together and how each of those cases built on the previous ones. And now here we are, faced with the cumulative results of all those rulings!
I was ever so slightly encouraged by the way Roberts recently spoke out against Schlump calling for the impeachment of any judge whose rulings the president happens not to like. It was very unusual for Roberts to do something like that, and I hope (while NOT holding my breath) that may be a sign that he may be just barely beginning to get a tiny inkling of the kind of monster he helped to create. Time will tell.

(2,396 posts)A group of House Democrats introduced a constitutional amendment on Thursday to overturn a Supreme Court ruling that eliminated restrictions on corporate campaign spending.
The Supreme Court’s 2010 ruling in the Citizens United v. FEC case prohibited the government from restricting political campaign spending by companies, nonprofit organizations and unions. This amendment, if passed, would allow Congress and state governments to enact “reasonable, viewpoint-neutral” limitations on campaign funding, including restricting corporations from spending “unlimited amounts of money to influence elections.”
