No, Democrats Don't Need a Straight White Guy to Win in 2028
So Axios had a story this weekend about how a bunch of DC-based Democratic strategists think Democrats have to run a straight, white, Christian man in 2028 to win the presidency. And this is exactly the kind of lazy analysis you get from a lot of the DC consulting class that drives me absolutely up a wall.
I want to take a moment to explain my position, because I think very differently than a lot of other strategists in the party.
Up front: sexism, racism, homophobia, anti-Semitism, Islamophobiathese things are real. It is harder for a person of color or a woman to get elected president of the United States. Just look at the track record. That part is obvious.
But my rebuttal isnt that those things dont exist. Its that theres something deeper going on. And if we dont understand that, were going to keep misdiagnosing why we lose.

(23,227 posts)The DNC didnt spend $20 million to learn how to listen to men, to then nominate a woman or POC in 2028.
I dont like it, but unless there are major changes in the partys power structure, and who those in power listen to over the next year, that appears to be the path forward- the nominee will be a straight white male not named Shapiro or Newsom.

(5,495 posts)This all the freaking way! We are looking for people who will fight for us in all three branches of government. The Dems have produced very few fighters, and even fewer fighters who realize the enemy is the obscene wealth and corporate consolidation.
Whether you like Trump or not, thats what he represents to a lot of voters. Yes, hes betrayed that trustand thats why his approval is sinking like a rockbut the appeal was never about identity alone. It was about perceived authenticity.

I believe the Democratic Party can do better than this. Sen. Mark Kelly, Gov. JB Pritzker, Gov. Gavin Newsom, and several others will get chances in the next 2 years and they will put Chump to shame. We have real leaders who can see the problems and they have real answers for Americans. If people just put down their phones for 10 G-D minutes and listen to a real leader, it will make all the difference in 2028.

(41,631 posts)You must realize that?! It was all planned and carried out by others, and Project 2025 was just the tip of the iceberg. The ultra-conservatives have been giving him orders all along, and making him feel like he's the "smart guy that makes the decisions." They play to his narcissism and his other personality deficits and he does as he's told. Then he plays golf while they do all the work.

Dems just need someone who clearly articulates the issues and can talk frankly and off the cuff easily and doesn't seem overly scripted.

(5,495 posts)Its not just message, its a clear agenda and bold action to accomplish it. As Ive said before, talking about affordablility amounts to pleading with the billionaires and corporations to tone it down a bit on the greed, so Im still waiting for a clear agenda that is way more that.
