(6,365 posts)It began with wind-driven torrents of rain that eventually turned to wet, sloppy snow, and then to drifting powder, driving even the most determined kids from the streets.
I was in my early thirties at the time, and far past trick-or-treating age. In the morning, with the streets impassable, I set out on foot to cover the two miles to the home of my then-girlfriend, the present-day Mrs. Ed.
When I had finally waded through the drifts all the way to her house, I found her standing atop the snowdrift that concealed her front steps, bundled up and clutching her only snow shovel. Tears welled up in her eyes as she cried in despair, "How can we ever move all of this snow?!"
"A shovelful at a time", I smiled, gently brushing a frozen tear from her cheek and taking the snow shovel in my hand.
And, a shovelful at a time, I proceeded to work through the day to clear her steps, then her walks, then her driveway. To this day, on a rare occasion when we find ourselves daunted by adversity, I'll tell her softly, " A shovelful at a time, Love. A shovelful at a time."

(106,571 posts)Coats and often long pants and shirts UNDER the costume. Geebus. But my happy memory was the (quite dangerous for a 5 or 6 yo) GLASS little pumpkin lantern. LOL (Giving a kid glass to carry, but that was the time).
I'm sure mine eventually broke or was passed on to others, but damn if they don't go for $$$ on ebay. This one is $70 current bid, but it will go much higher!

(35,988 posts)My mom hated trick-or-treating. She said it was begging. But we were allowed to go out and trick-or-treat for UNICEF with little milk cartons with orange labels on them to put the change in.

(2,490 posts)We had an across the street neighbor that would greet the trick or treaters with a booming praise the lord (he was hard of hearing so he shout talked in normal conversation) and passed out religious tracts instead of treats. Needless to say the kids werent thrilled.

(46,844 posts)Older woman, she would hand out those little "Chick Tracts," when we began ignoring her house she'd run out seeing us, screaming at us about us going to Hell, several parents called the cops, eventually she ended up going to a mental institution.

(70,303 posts)...I found out that the schools here are doing early release.
12:30.
So, they are helping to get rid of some of what you are rightfully seeing as an issue.
I was there subbing 6th grade science today and I saw the 1st semester schedule in the classroom.

(70,303 posts)The first post-COVID Halloween around here was badly marred by a cold blast.
Windy, cold, snow/sleet.
Hardly any kids came by & those few that did, we had no idea what their costumes were.
You're right. Cold can ruin Halloween.
