The shellac (the shiny coating) is made from secretions by the female lac bug. These bugs live in India and Thailand.
Candy Corn isn't the only candy sold in the U.S. that contains bug secretions.
M&M's fans, the shiny coating doesn't contain bug juice on it so please keep enjoying your M&M's.
What do these lady bugs get paid for their excretions? Maybe they should unionize!
