Before the divorce Desi Arnaz was quoted in the press when this was found out , as saying "The only thing red about Lucy is her hair, and even that is not legitimate." This came out at the height of the McCarthy Witch hunts and could have truly ended her career but several people vouched for her and she even voted for Eisenhower (republican). She told HUAC that she only registered at the insistence of her socialist grandfather (who later changed his views when he found out about Stalin) She swore she never even attending a meeting, and even Reagan had serious doubts about the accusation, and later they were friends.

It's been covered many times and in several movies. Lucy explained that she only did it to please her dying father. She was never a practicing communist.
