3. VHF is generally good for line of sight communications, absent a repeater.

Quirky atmospheric conditions sometimes allow for much longer distance communications, but that's rare.

Given that HTs usually max out at 5 watts, and don't have directional antennas, I wouldn't count on hundred mile QSOs.
