Bought a shortwave radio to potentially tap into news sources from outside the U.S. if need be.

Kind of a bust. I imagined that countries would keep their international broadcasts going out of inertia and national pride. Nope. Not much out there.

Hold onto your radio until the danger has passed.

Signed up for a foreign-based email service and also a foreign-based VPN. May come in handy. Also trying to get smart about encryption.

It's all tools in a toolbox. Not all the tools will be useful, but some of them might be.

Their names and a link would be helpful. I would like to do the same as you have done.

broadcasts predominate. I still have a small sony portable I used to travel with years ago and intend to keep--just in case. There are still amateurs who relay the signals and broadcast out there.

The key benefit is those transmissions cannot be readily blocked. So, as more governments fall to authoritarianism there may be some resurgence.

When I was a kid my older brother was into shortwave. We had a wire strung outside our upstairs bedroom window and attached it to a pole out by the alley. We listened to radio stations all over the world, but our biggest thrill was listening in on ham operators.
