Husband & I love this show
We live in Senior Apartments ~ Independent Living,,,, amazingly similar,,,, I'm talking the people that live there and old folks dating and marrying old folks,,,, and situations
But ours are more like apartments with no memory care attached.
Anyway this show is 'laugh out loud kinda funny" for us anyway

"The Handmaid's Tale" seems appropriate to me given our current situation. I also just re-read the novel.

I have cable TV and internet through Mediacom. I have a lot of extra channels on Mediacom cable, including all the sports channels and the package that includes Turner Classic Movies. I watch that channel a lot because I love old movies. I also watch a lot of videos on YouTube on my laptop computer. There are many more channels I could pay extra for, like HBO and Showtime and Cinemax, but the problem is, my Mediacom bill is almost $300 per month now and I have to set a limit. I hear about things like Hulu and Netflix and others. Is that what "streaming" means? Do I have to watch them on my computer or my TV? Are they additional options or channels I could pay extra for on my cable TV packages? What does "streaming" mean? I honestly don't know. Some of these shows are ones I would really like to watch. There's a "Foundation" series somewhere, for example. I am a HUGE fan of Isaac Asimov's "Foundation" novels and would LOVE to see that TV series, but don't know how. I just bought the first season of "The Handmaid's Tale" on DVD and binge-watched it and season two is on order from Barnes & Noble. It's on Hulu, I think, but how do I get Hulu? Is it something you get by "streaming", whatever that means? Somebody please explain to me what "streaming" means, because I honestly don't know.
Adding on edit: I just looked up "streaming" on dictionary dot com and the third definition reads: "a technology for transferring data so that it can be received and processed in a steady stream" but that doesn't tell me what I need to know about "streaming" in this context. What I want to know is, where do get it? Do I have to pay somebody for it? How do I find out who "streams" the particular program that I want to watch? Do I have to watch it on my computer through my internet or on my TV through my cable? Questions like that. This seems to be something that everybody knows except for me, so another question I have is: HOW did y'all learn what "streaming" is?

(10,408 posts)television and movies.
"In demand" is like having options of a VHS, DVD, or DVR at your fingertips without having the actual VHS or DVD.
"Live" is what's currently being aired just like cable TV. There are times I will set the DVR for something that will be aired when I won't be home so that I can watch it later.
Streaming is relatively inexpensive compared to cable.
Here's an example of Sling's cost for 2024
As of early 2024, Sling TV offers the following pricing options per month:
Sling Orange: $40
Sling Blue: $40
Sling Orange + Sling Blue: $55
Channel packs: $6–$21
Premium channels: $3–$10
Streaming services always raise the costs of packages but it's still more affordable than cable. At home I have Sling, Hulu, Disney Plus and Amazon Prime. I don't have Netflix. We don't pay near what we use to pay with cable.
I hope that I explained this so that you can understand it.

(23,154 posts)Our new Roku will do the switch from streaming services to antenna TV which is great!!
Roku has several free things like Free Speech TV, Tune In, and a big catalogue on the Roku site itself.
We saved a bunch even with the channels we subscribe to. I don't count Prime because I have a membership anyway, and the video service is part of that package.
Plus, the entire inventory of a particular show from first episode to last is available. No taping required. (unless you are watching antenna TV)

(2,405 posts)Where do I go? What do I do? Do I go to a store like Best Buy or Barnes & Noble? Do I call a telephone number and sign up? Do I go to my Mediacom cable office and tell them I want to add Roku or Hulu or Sling or whatever to my channel lineup? Do I go to a web site and go through some kind of online sign-up procedure? Do I have to buy some kind of hardware like a satellite dish? I still have no idea how or where to get these "streaming" services or exactly what they are.

(10,408 posts)My previous TV was a 10 year old Vizio and I needed a Roku device with that TV.
Here's some helpful how to videos to watch.
I had to purchase a new TV back in August. The new TV is a TCL brand and it already had Roku set up or built into it, so I don't need a Roku device or a Roku stick.
And because technology is forever changing, I sometimes need help. My adult daughter had to show me how to use the buttons on the steering wheel of my new vehicle because I couldn't figure out how to do simple things like set my cruise control. It was frustrating when I couldn't figure it out.

(29,784 posts)Cable is old tech - coax cable. I ran a shitload of it in 1999 when I built my log home. Have cut and ripped out most of it. Currently using Starlink, but will be switching to Fidium in the Spring. I'd do it now, but I need to run an underground conduit to the house to bring the glass fiber into the house. It's winter here with 14" of snow on the ground and I am not going to FA with doing it until April.

(8,892 posts)Smart TVs like Samsungs can run apps like Netflix and Amazon Video, so you wouldn't need any additional hardware. Otherwise, I recommend getting a Roku as others have stated. If you are an Apple fan you might prefer Apple TV.
As you've discovered, there is no "TV Guide" for streaming. It's a mishmash of different apps on different platforms run by different companies. Do some research and pick one that seems like the best option. If the content gets stale, cancel it and try another.

All you need is internet service. Dump your cable. It's a rip off.

(16,504 posts)The easiest fix is just buy a Roku box. It's a onetime purchase, Roku is free. I would suggest the top of the line box.
https://www.roku.com/products/roku-ultra
You just pay for the streaming services, if you want one. Such as Sling, Netflix etc. If you have a Prime Account, you will get that free.
Look around on Roku's website to see what is available.
Lochloosa
(16,504 posts)There are tons of free with add services on Roku also.

(4,999 posts)You can get hook ups for your TV like Roku (which I have) or Amazon prime stick. Or you can get a smart TV. I switched when my cable bill hit 300. Was not going to pay that.

(4,589 posts)"Streaming" specifically means it's delivered over the internet, not over the air or via cable/satellite.
The streaming service providers are NOT equivalent to channels. As someone else said, they are more akin to a library of offerings, or maybe like a studio with a deep back catalog of things. They shuffle some of their available offerings monthly.
The PRIMARY difference, though, is watching is always on-demand. This means you find and watch your film or show whenever you want to, provided the streaming service is offering it at the time. Even the slight exception to this, where premium shows release an episode per week, you can watch the episode anytime after it's been released because it's on-demand viewing.
How do you know what's streaming where? There is no equivalent to TV guide because a "schedule" doesn't apply. I use an app called JustWatch. When I'm looking for something , I search JustWatch to figure out if it's currently streams if so, where.
One last twist to this tale: In the past, you purchased box sets of shows you wanted to have available to you whenever you wanted to watch it. This is still a good practice! But. You can also purchase the streaming season or series from Amazon Prime or Apple.

(460 posts)because I so loved the books that the TV effort fell short, although Alexander McCall Smith did say he was pleased with it so perhaps I need to give it another look.
Many TV adaptations can be enjoyable and I can even enjoy trying to figure out why changes were made.
Just got the newest book in the series from the library and if you haven't tried the books I recommend them.
One TV adaptation that I highly recommend is the Campion series with Peter Davison available to stream on britbox.

(20,600 posts)5 months I'd "swap" the carfare I'd spend for streaming.
Finally catching up (after getting rid of Paramount+ ?2 yrs ago) with the rest of Piccard, Discovery, Liower Decks. Then I'll totally watch Strange New Worlds.
Watched the first 3 seasons of The Good Fight on Pluto which I'd never seen. Paramont+ has all 6 seasons. I think I originally watched S4, maybe part/all S5 in real time back then.
Then I'll stop that. Wait for Hulu streaming S6 of The Handmaid’s Tale, and get that.
That's my plan, anyway! 👍
And go back, and binge Person of Interest, and Fringe. Two of my 6 favorite shows.
