decorations.
In NYC, maybe elsewhere people often strung lights on their fire escapes. I love that! You could see window decorations, and sometimes inside where a tree would be.
When I lived in Brookyln our block had mostly Brownstones. They had tall, big windows so you got to see a lot of decorations, often big trees!
Though, I've never been to the Dyker Heights (Brooklyn) big, fancy displays.
Also when we'd visit our cousin's in Northern NJ: when they'd drive us a few towns over to catch our bus home; it was wonderful to see all the various outdoor houses, trees, and yards decorated up! Where we actually waiting for the bus was right next to the town's center park. Across the street from that was a very tall fir tree all decked out in blue lights.
Some years back ?10ish or so Luminares became a thing in that area of NJ. We saw a lot of those, often going up the walkway to the front door, or stairs/porch. Sooo pretty!
Beyond that I havent been to Midtown Manhattan to see the Rockefeller tree, etc, or Bryant Park tree since covid. I think I'm going to go but stay back from the full crowds. With mask on in the crowded outside areas.

(123,448 posts)but they didn't put salt on the streets. They used gravel instead. It was beautiful at Christmas time. I do go for drives in different neighborhoods with family. I enjoy seeing the character of neighbourhood: one working class in the 19th Century now renovated. Another mixed market housing with some who can afford it putting up lights. Another new development with huge playgrounds and a modern mix of homes for every income (it is truly the only way to build these days). Traditional and modern homes. I like mid century modern houses myself.

(18,445 posts)I'd enjoy visiting both cities again.
In the music/band site I was in a whole lot for years I had longtime Canadian acquaintences, mostly near, in Toronto. We has a lot of fun.
And we went on the then quite new Toronto Subway which rode so quietly!

(18,445 posts)I, grew up in the second northernmost neighborhood in Manhattan. I also have spent a lot of time in it northernmost neighborhood via relatives for decades.
I've also spent time job wise, and fun wise near, and at the southern most tip of Manhattan (and it's western edge, and eastern edge by the two rivers The Hudson, and East/Harlem Rivers).
So I have long experienced living in, and hanging out in parts of a city on an island. Chicago is the reverse. A city barely surrounding a bit of a huge lake. That fascinates me, too.
I do hope I can visit.

(159 posts)were little. We'd make hot chocolate, put it into travel cups, put a christmas music cd in the player, and drive around for an hour or so. One subdivision had what the kids called dancing lights: that is, the trees along the main drive into it were decorated with twinkling lights which were then coordinated with christmas music from one of the local radio stations.
It was usually part of our christmas crafting weekend.

(24,280 posts)We look at the decorations while we walk and discuss them and when driving this time of year we always drive around in the neighborhood looking at the lights before we drive home. There are a lot more decorations this year than usual around here. I guess the people in our area are prospering, so far. Next year I expect to see significantly less decorations, tarrifs will destroy our cash flows.

(25,785 posts)He would drive through various upscale neighborhoods, both in our town and in the one next to us. This would be on different nights leading up to Christmas. The neighborhoods were always unbelievably decorated, and the lighting was fantastic. It was like a competition to see who could do the most. Those were special times with my Mom and Dad
