(37,398 posts)there they were in vintage boxes. I bought four boxes. As a kid I could sit there on the couch and wait for them to heat up and bubble. However, the best one for me was the first ornament my son made for us. I still have it and he is 35 years old,

(7,137 posts)about 20 years ago with the rotating lights. It wasn't cheap, even used.
My lady friend doesn't get the vibe, so it's in the attic nowadays. I do like her trees and decorations, though.

Yes, Eggs. Our tree has probably close to 100 hand made decorated Eggs. Chicken, Duck, Goose, even Ostrich Eggs. Oh yea, back in the 70's, my grandmother used Leggo Eggs too. The ones with the clear tops have lovely scenes inside. All are Decorated on the outside, most with a cut-out and decorated scene on the inside. The Ostrich Eggs are too big for the Tree so mom puts those in these crystal goblets up on the mantle (she lived on an Ostrich farm for a while, we have about 10 of these).
Each one has history, and they are considered Treasures to us. We could never pick one over any other. The fact that hours have been spent on each one by a loving member of our matriarchy (mom and me are the only ones left now) means a lot to us.

(35,894 posts)my ceramic Kliban cat ornaments. But the most special is the Santa tree topper. My mom got it for her first Christmas when she was a few months old in 1924 so it's 100 years old this year. When I was a kid, I always wanted a flashy star or angel, but it was always this Santa. Now I wouldn't have anything else.
This year's model:

on a sled, on the mantle each year. Sons gave it to me when they were young.
Plastic reindeer that hangs in my car each winter. From Air Force days.
Old snow man wreath that hangs in the laundry room, has moved four times with us, appears mysteriously after first snowfall annually. Known as "Laundry Room Snowman".
Lots of others...

(12,236 posts)They were so cute and I dwell on them when I decorate the tree, remembering how excited they used to get at Xmas.
I place them in special spots I pick on the tree so they will be in view.

(15,631 posts)That unfortunately is no longer around as it just started disintegrating was a gingerbread house from when I was a kid. It wasn't a traditional cottage but more of a ranch-style house if that makes sense. Completely covered in frosting with those little squarish Xmas hard candies making up the roof and round peppermint candies arch for the door, ribbon candy for window sills, etc. It was on a base that was also covered in frosting, and there was a weird 1960s plastic Santa that came from who knows where that you could place in two holes on the roof next to the chimney.

(9,798 posts)He was great at art. My favorite was always Tigger. I don't know what happened to the other ones, but I still have Tigger. Now that my father is gone, it's extra special to me.

(5,158 posts)Her tree is full of memories. Ornaments my sister and I made 40+ years ago, ones my nieces and nephew made more recently, hobby and interest- related fun ornaments, stuff from vacations, tributes to our many, many pets both past and present... unpacking the boxes is always a treat.
My favorites are 12 small glass balls (only 10 usable) that were on Mom's tree when she was a child. Here's a photo with 2 of them:
Also, starched lace snowflakes my Great Grandma made.
Today I pulled a glass cello out of the box and recognized it from Grandma's tree. She had several and I didn't realize Mom has them now. It was bittersweet. I miss Grandma and Grandpa and the loss hits harder during the holidays.

(5,158 posts)They've been around as long as I can remember (and well before me). They may be crocheted?

(18,443 posts)Definitely crocheted. 👍
Kind of nice to see that particular crafting appearing elsewhere. 🙂

(18,443 posts)painted red, painted face, with paper beard, white "fur" trimmed hat.
I have the falling apart clothpin angel. Yellow construction paper wings broken, ?blue painted w pink face open mouth singing. Yellow paper halo.
These are around 60+ yrs old.
She did Styrofoam balls decorated with sequins, or fake pearls held in with straight pins. So my sis and I have a few. 55+ yrs old.
She also made out of thick cardboard cut out flat ornament shapes covered with colored fabric, decorated with sequins, rick rack etc. I think my sis and I have 2 each. These are around 55+ yrs old.
I want to try, and make the 6 pointed 3 D strar out of plastic straws. Tried once failed.
This time I'm going to cut the straws in half. Easier to send the string w needle through. You start with the cube shape then add the star points.
I love Christmas decorations!🥰

(18,443 posts)My mom also made crocheted snowflakes. White, probably the thicker coat thread. Then stiffened with watered down Elmore's glue. We still have a few of these.

(53 posts)my mom helped my sisters and me make when we were little. When my kids were little, my mom made us an ornament set of soft, cotton stuffed Beatrix Potter characters that she embroidered (Peter Rabbit, Jemina Puddleduck, Mrs. Tittlemouse, and Tom Kitten). A set of 24 punch out wooden ornaments that my kids and I sanded and painted. We worked on them together every weekend a couple of months before Christmas. One year the mother of one of my students knitted me a teeny tiny ornament set which were a pair of mittens, a sweater, and a hat. I couldnt imagine how she made them so tiny and asked her. She showed me that she knitted them with toothpicks!! What a delightful thread this is you started and have enjoyed reading all the posts! Enjoy your holidays everyone!😊

(24,280 posts)Grandmother knitted (crocheted?) little bells of all colors and blends of colors and they are so cute and have had them for decades!
Mom had other ornaments her mom gave to her of little dolls which I inherited when mom died. My aunt Juanita was a dedicated crafter owned her own store at one time. We have little handpainted wooden ornaments from her, both ones she gave me and ones she gave mom. The best one is the one she gave to mom when dad was on his last legs. It's a painting of his dad's fishing boat, The Minnow, with a sign across the front of it with my dad's name on it - Sam. It meant a lot to all of us and still does!
I love the memories I get to review every Christmas!

(25,574 posts)...into which I put their newborn nursery pictures, so those have a special place in my heart.
I also have an antique glass Santa that I cherish - can't remember if it was from my mom's or dad's side of the family, but it hung in our tree when I was kid and I'm 73 now, so it's been around a long time. There's no one left to ask about which side this ornament came from.
And, from pre-school thru college, I got each son the same ornament, and wrote the date on the back/bottom. This started when I wanted to establish our own Christmas tradition unique to our family. When the boys were young enough to believe in Santa, after they'd fallen asleep, we would hang that year's ornaments on the doorknobs of their bedrooms - typically, they would wake up before we did, and the ornament-on-the-doorknob was the sign that Santa had made his rounds. We continued the practice until they finished college.
When he was 5 or 6, our older son showed up at our beside at 7 minutes before 5 AM - yes, 7 minutes before 5, not 5 minutes before 7 (aka 4:53). My husband made him go back to bed.
And, I was always careful to say "the spirit of Sant Claus," so I couldn't be accused of lying once the awful truth came out.
