The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsBizarre conversation I just had with an old friend.
We were pretty good friends back in the day. Then we sort of lost touch, mainly because we were caught up raising families and such. I called him about 4 or 5 years ago and we got caught up. Then I decided to give him a call, what with it being the holidays and all. Here's how it went:
Me: Hey "T", how's it going? Haven't spoken in a while and I thought I'd give you a call and catch up with you.
T: I have nothing to say to you. And I'm at work.
Me: Huh? Maybe we could chat at another time and figure out what the problem is here.
T: I have no reason to ever talk to you again.
Me: Have a nice life. Bye.
WTF do you make of that? It was like being sucker punched. We've never had a fight. Mainly because we haven't spoken much in the last 10 years. I just don't get it.

It sucks to lose old friends, but this guy sounds like a jerk, so you're probably better off.

And she said, absolutely not. And she reminded me that I taught her to be brutally honest. Especially when it comes to me.

(14,712 posts)Brush off without explanation sounds like he has a personal issue that is uncomfortable for him to talk about....Again, his problem..
I had a similar situation with an old friend. Buddies since our late teens. We had the same interests and hobbies. He slowly turned from liberal to neutral to asshole conservative over the years. Long story short I kept telling him to stop sending me his mindless forwarded right wing emails and meme bullshit.
Then one day he just said he has had enough, good bye, don't call or try to get in touch..
At least him and I know why he wanted to end the friendship...... politics...
Strange as I have other conservative friends and the trick for us is we don't talk politics. everything else is fair game...

(24,132 posts)He's bounced around working for one non-profit after another. Just scraped by. He got divorced many years ago and I don't know how much his kids talk to him. I've lived a fairly comfortable life. Decent career and a close family. That's just a guess. But since we don't talk, I'm not sure if he's jealous of my situation or not. Not that I'm rich or anything.
