(2,560 posts)I hate ketchup so much that when I eat in restaurants, I erect a little barrier of the napkin dispenser, salt and pepper shakers, steak sauce, etc., and hide the ketchup bottle behind that barrier so I don't even have to look at it.
I don't eat French fries often, but when I do, I eat them without any condiments on them at all. I like that potato-ey flavor and don't want to cover it up with anything else.
Have you ever visited Belgium? In that country, they dip fries in mayonnaise. I ate at a McDonald's in that country once in about 2004 and dipped my fries in mayonnaise because ... well, because, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do."
Pat Sajak and Vanna White used to argue on air about putting ketchup on hot dogs. White puts it on hers, Sajak hates it on his. I, of course, am on Sajak's side in this debate. Ketchup on hot dogs is an obscenity to me. I put mustard, onions and sauerkraut on my hot dogs. Or, chili and mustard.
I love tomatoes, but there's something they do to tomatoes when they make ketchup out of them that just ruins them. IMHO. Yuck.

(40,509 posts)Ketchup is vile and disgusting.
I dont like the looks of it, I dont like the smell of it, if others want to lap it up, knock yourselves out, just do it far away from me.
I love tomatoes, tomato soup, spaghetti sauce, and salsa. To address your last line, I think its the vinegar they put in ketchup that makes it completely and utterly nauseating.

(14,240 posts)a trip to Europe in the 1970s. Walking around the streets of Amsterdam after the bar some friends and I stopped at a vendor's cart by a canal bridge who was selling hot fries. We had the Amsterdam munchies, if you know what I mean, and couldn't resist. Instead of ketchup, wonderful rich mayonnaise was the only condiment offered and our taste-buds went zing!
Since then, I have preferred European style mayonnaise, tarter sauce, Ranch, Roquefort, or any creamy style dressing over ketchup.

(184 posts)but must be a not-so-sweet ketchup, generally Heinz.
Sometimes I will dip or pour a generous amount on each bite of whatever merits ketchup. I'm pretty fond of it.
Although i do have ranch & malt vinegar kicks.
Occasionally I'll put a mayo & ketchup pool side by side and scoop/ dip my fries or deserving sandwich through both.

(1,293 posts)I've been know to spread the ketchup on them first. However, I dip the french fries when I substitute mayonnaise for ketchup. I first tired mayonnaise on french fries while stationed in Germany in the 90s. The Germans preferred mayonnaise to ketchup.
Interesting factoid. The first tomato ketchup was invented in 1812.
Also, when you're at a fast food burger joint and you ketchup is in a little pleated cup. pull the pleats apart and you can get more ketchup in it and dip your french fries easier.
