(190,020 posts)I’m guessing from your screen name you are going from Arizona.
I was told by a dealer at Ceasar’s that the Friday night 10-6 shift is the best. People fly in from the East Coast, probably are drinking in the way, and throw money around way more due to their compromised conditions. She was an experienced dealer so she got first/more choice in shifts. She said this was tip heaven. She said people really should just enjoy a great meal the first night but she’d take the tips. I actually made some money but the next night with some rest I turned $300 into $800 paying for the trip. Single deck 21 with $10 minimum table.

(5,874 posts)So I am not being glib when I say the best thing you can do is leave.
What I mean is get out of town towards some of the best natural and man-made wonders in the world.
Hoover Dam is close enough for a day trip and is really cool.
Even better if you have time to get out to Bryce, Zion or Grand Canyon.

(1,172 posts)Someone had the great idea to restore the old classic signs including the “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign.
I also loved eating at the PepperMill restaurant. Classic Vegas with leather booths and good, cheap food and huge portions. Get the shrimp cocktail and a Bloody Mary or martini. I expected Dean or Frank to show up.

(10,510 posts)Even though I've never been to Vegas, this is the stuff that I would be interested in. Keep in mind, I'm not into casino's or amusement park rides.
If one is driving I would definitely stop to see the south rim of the Grand Canyon. It's about 280 miles away from Las Vegas.
There are bus and helicopter tours from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon. I would imagine that it's expensive to use that transportation though.

(296 posts)I went there years ago and really enjoyed it.

(296 posts)Did you enjoy it? What attractions did you go to see? Did you go to any of the above suggested places?
My mother and I used to go every year and we loved it. My mother loved to gamble. I did too, to an extent, but I also enjoyed sight-seeing, the shows and the food. Everything used to be so inexpensive there in those days. Now - yikes! It's just like every other major city, so costly.

(18,277 posts)I went for a guided hike at Red Rock. Very cool as the guide was an archeologist. Did a short kayak trip on the Colorado River to Emerald Cave, and did a tour to the Western Edge of the Grand Canyon, Arizona Joshua tree forest, and Hoover Dam. I saw “O” Cirque du Soleil. I swear I could see it 20 more times and still not see all of it. It was truly amazing! I lucked up and got a front row center stage seat. Traveling solo has its advantages. I’ve learned I don’t really like to gamble any more. Too much losing and not enough winning. Plus, they have gotten really stingy about the free drinks. Vegas is stupid expensive. $12 Michelobe Ultra and $40 for a pizza seems a bit steep.
The Grand Canal Shoppes at the Venetian is pretty cool.

(296 posts)First trip to Vegas, we went on a tour to the movie stars' homes; Liberace Museum; candy factory; and the Hoover Dam. As it was before 9/11, there were no restricted areas at Hoover Dam and we saw everything. On another trip, we went to the west rim of the Grand Canyon and that was really nice. It was a long ride, but worth it. Of course, my mother was not too happy about being so far away from the casinos, but she ended up enjoying herself.
I'd seen Cirque du Soleil's "Mystere" and "Beatles Love" shows and always wanted to see "O". We finally saw it the last time we went to Vegas and it was awesome. We were staying at the Bellagio and ordinarily, we would get a discount on tickets for staying there, but since the holiday season had just started (we were there the week of Thanksgiving), not only did we not get a discount, they jacked the prices up! Despite the higher prices, tickets were scarce and we ended up paying top dollar for one step above "obstructed view." Even up in the cheap seats, it was a breathtaking show. I would definitely see it again.

(18,277 posts)why it was the cheapest option. Great location but that’s about it.

(296 posts)To tell the truth, I liked Bally's better. It used to be connected to Paris and we stayed there once too. I think it's Horseshoe now but I'm not sure. I love the Bellagio; I think it's the most beautiful hotel/casino of them all. We stayed there a few times; usually, we'd stay two nights at one place and then two nights there. The last time we stayed all four nights at the Bellagio because we were celebrating the end of my mother's cancer treatment and a milestone birthday for me. What I didn't like was the extra "resort fee" they tacked on to the bill every day. At checkout, I explained that we never used any of the resort fee services and they said they could only take off two of them so I paid $56.00 for absolutely nothing.

It does give one a different perspective of time. To think a little stream of water did all that!

(2,348 posts)The Neon Museum at night is cool. Mob Museum and Pinball Hall of Fame are good. I enjoyed the Atomic Testing Museum as well. If you like cars or movies, there is a Hollywood Car museum that has some of the famous cars from movies and TV shows.
At the casinos, the Bellagio Conservatory and Wynn Flower Garden are cool and free. The Titanic exhibit at the Luxor was also interesting.
Show wise, Penn and Teller and any of the Cirque du Soleil shows I've enjoyed.
Buffet wise, stick to the Wynns or Caesars.
My wife and I go often, so I can make some specific recommendations if you let me know what your interests are.

(18,277 posts)They have live music 1pm - 5 pm and the bands have been good. I did the breakfast buffet at the Bellagio, not impressed. I’m leaving tomorrow morning. Overall, I’m glad I came but I don’t think it’s my scene. I love live music and there seems to be more of a DJ thing happening here. Also, it’s a long way from home so not something I can do on a long weekend.

Not encouraging you to use, but it is really something to see. I went to one with a co-worker last conference I was in LVS, and like you, I chose not to partake - for the same reasons.

(9,373 posts)Lived with a woman from 1973 to 1977 that was 6 plus years older and had just finished a Masters at University of Nevada Reno. She had a bad attitude about casinos because she had supported herself working as a cocktail waitress in Reno in middle of the night shifts. I had not started college yet.
We went to visit common friends in Los Cruses, NM (from Humboldt County, CA). I wanted to see the Grand Canyon so we drove the south rim and stopped in Las Vegas for the night. We scoped out the casinos and scammed free drinks on the Strip. Knowing the lay we reentered and gathered all the book matches from the restrooms we could gather in day backs and met at a given time and exit and made a quick getaway to next casino. We hit maybe a dozen casinos and gathered many many matches. Know it was Fall, because we gave Christmas gifts of mixed Las Vegas casino matches to just about everyone we knew, family and fiends and friends. This was back when many still smoked and before the disposable lighters were invented or common anyway plus match covers could be torn off and used as a roach clip.
Good times. Rated an excellent memory. Have fun!
