The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsWow!!! Just noticed that yesterday was my 20th Anniversary as a DUer!!!
3/04/2025 - Man, where does the time fly?! I remember feeling so down that Dubya won the 2nd term by a hair against the unfairly swiftboated John Kerry. Air America Radio was hitting its stride. This site was a whole heap of solace and sanity in a world that didn't make sense (little did any of us know what would be in store 20 years later!).
Thank you folks!!!

(777 posts)I forget where I was exactly on the internet, but I was just hitting that perfect stride of being willing to try while not particularly caring about the outcome. The happy medium that makes things start happening for the better. I wasn't here though. Never even heard of this joint until a few months ago.

(1,969 posts)I can only imagine that your unique journey has DU mile markers all along the trip that adds to its achievements as well as memories.
I love special moments. They are an important way to memorialize our lives and I would guess you have many that directly connect you, DU and your deepest passions.
I would love to sit around a proverbial fire place and listen to those stories.
God speed

(9,025 posts)Started out AM Talk Radio junkie back in Detroit, fell into being a Black Randroid Libertarian Dittohead Conservative (yah, I know, LOTSA contradictions there, LOL), became disillusioned by all the hypocrisy (e.g. fellow right-wingers cursing Janet "Butch" Reno and the "Clintonistas"---as they were referred to--for the Waco siege while seeing nothing amiss with Philly Mayor Wilson Goode previously bombing the MOVE, and the whole David Duke thing had me rethinking my political friendships).
Started reading more intellectual conservative articles and even plowed through Russell Kirk's "The Conservative Mind," which left me quite dissatisfied ever further with my politics and philosophy.
Moved to NYC in '96, rebooted my life and became a Green Party leftist self-styled semi-bohemian who voted for Nader in 2000 (Kool-Aid comes in many flavors). Lived through 9/11 with regrets, even though Gore easily won NY, and switched my voter registration to Democratic (so I could, at the very least, participate in the primaries). Rooted for Howard Dean but was happy to back John Kerry in '04 only to be heartbroken by his narrow loss in the election.
But, I never looked back except to remind myself what I was fortunate enough to leave behind. And, to this hallowed forum, I owe my mental well-being.

(1,969 posts)I'm thrilled for you as every word says celebrate. You've touched many along the way and I feel honored to have met you at one of your life's bus stops. I'm honored and thank you.
