(109,223 posts)everyone gets the same from someone pretty much "slopping it out." I guess because it was home-cooked there, it might have been healthier than one might imagine, but it didn't seem very appetizing. So the home-packed sandwiches looked a lot better.

Not much healthy stuff in late 50s and 60s. Mostly grilled cheese sandwiches and hot dogs.

(36,648 posts)When I was in high school you could buy French fries and a slushy for lunch if you didn’t like what was being served that day. Eventually some parents complained so they got rid of those.
The only thing to me that was palatable was the tomato soup and grilled cheese. I packed my lunch most days.

(12,863 posts)Cheddar, of course. They were crisp on the outside and tender inside with melted cheddar. I adored them. Also, we never bleached flour as in the U.S. then.
It is nice to see you posting, debm55. I hope you are feeling better.

(311 posts)Being an Air Force Brat, I went to nine different schools in twelve years. The best school food was in Arizona, and if the cafeteria meal of the day didn't look good, they had a snack bar. Good burritos.
The worst was California. They put tuna where tuna never belonged. Nothing smelled or looked right. To this day I can't abide the smell of tuna cooking. Then there was something I reckon was supposed to be beef stroganoff. Whatever it was, it was gray. All of it, the meat, the sauce, the noodles. Ugh!
So happy you're back! Hope every day finds you feeling better!
Thanks again for the dmail!

(913 posts)Do have a funny story about school lunch. One year in high school, my brother and I had the same lunch period, and since we had several friends in common, we gathered around one of the larger round tables in the cafeteria commons. This particular day, dessert had been several choices of which chocolate pudding was one. Of course, all of us being chocoholics, we had all grabbed some. My brother was joking around about something, stuck his spoon in the bowl of pudding and turned it upside down. Several of us said his name in exasperation, as we were expecting the pudding to fall and make a mess. Imagine our surprise and consternation when the pudding stayed in the bowl! Its looked rather like an umbrella, lol. We stared at it for few minutes, then we all pushed our bowls to the edge of our trays. Needless to say, we never got lunchroom chocolate pudding after that!

(36,775 posts)Greasy hamburger gravy over wallpaper paste, er, "mashed potatoes," along with mushy things that used to be vegetables. That's where my hatred of canned vegetables began. Fishy "fish" sticks with soggy french fries. Blech. Actually, I usually brought my lunch because my dad made the best bread on the planet. By the time I got to high school, we'd skip out and go to the Dairy Queen just across the football field for loose meat sandwiches, burgers, etc., which were usually less than buying a lunch ticket.
So glad you're back!

(7,691 posts)They had a 'hot lunch' each day, but also had the usual 'grill' type stuff... hamburgers, hotdogs, fish sandwiches, French fries, grilled cheese, etc. Oh, and a soup of some kind.

(72,361 posts)No cafeteria in grade school (all bag lunch).
We had a really good cafeteria in HS.
I guess the grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup, or the beef stew, or the burgers were the best.
No salad bar, but they did put fresh tomato slices on the burgers.
