Where I live is imo a formerly affordable -now-HCOL area. Its over built wo infrastructure.
The "cheap" condos are 2/1 $185. I see nice 2/2 other places, granted a long move, $130. In a place Id b happier and be around ppl my age.
My partner keeps saying shit about living here. Its depressing here. I'm so pissed. I am starting to say shit like I'll move myself. He keeps saying I need to be near my drs but my favorite one retired. Whats the point?

(4,055 posts)I was looking at some condos in my old Chicago neighborhood (just for fun, not planning a move). The prices were GREAT!
And then I saw the HOA fees were over $1000 a month! Doubled the monthly cost.
I'm with you on being somewhere more affordable and closer to people your age.

(15,726 posts)Includes in many cases water and internet. The three here, the cheap one, in the 300/month. But who cares? If you're sick of a place you're sick of it. $1000 is outta my price range

(4,055 posts)You might be saving money each month, and be somewhere you like better.
I hope you find what's right for you!
Living now is so hard

(401 posts)I live in the San Diego area which has one of the highest COL in the nation. I bought my 3B/2.5B, 1,214 sqft condo in Sept 2003 for $490K. The reason for the high price was location, location, location. HOA fee back then were $175 and we’ve raised them over the years to $500.
The main things to look at when buying a condo are the HOA’s CC&R and their reserve study. The reserve study is most important since it tell you how much money the HOA is putting away to fund things like roof replacement. Many HOAs have low monthly fees and if a big expense come up they do an assessment which is unfair to a new home member because they’re paying to cost to repair/replace something the previous owner had use of. By keeping a reasonable HOA fee, owners are paying into the reserve fund whichever they are benefiting from living there.

(10,510 posts)I ask because mobile homes are generally affordable and are generally located in park with age restrictions.
If a hurricane was predicted in your area while living in a mobile home, you would have to seek shelter someplace.
I know if you're in a no win situation. I wanted to make a suggestion.
The affordable home parks are long gone. Already been through Florence. I mean, if I'm going to be in one hurricane prone area why not move to another one?
