I simply don't carry any loose change any more. My debit card is for everything.
I took all my quarters I had in jars to the bank and exchanged them for paper money. They gave me paper sleeves for future use. I now have them for my collection of dimes but I have an ominously full glass jar of pennies.
Does anybody else separate and keep jars or paper sleeves for redemption of coins at the bank?
I''d like to give the pennies away but it seems like a stupid thing to do, to burden someone else with the job.
Any ideas?

I do have a large jar filled with coins.

(10,063 posts)would make a great counting tool, the teacher could take them to the bank and use the proceeds for classroom supplies or an extra treat for the children.

(65,977 posts)Maybe I could give the big jar of pennies to my house cleaner (or ask if she'd be interested in taking it). She might have a relative who could manage it. There's a machine at the supermarket but I was told at the bank that those machines cheat you.

(41,975 posts)They get most of our coins which we put in a tin for each of them and they love it. A few years back we gave them all banks with the coin counter thing on top. I spend mostly cash. There is also a wishing well in town which I feed regularly. And I always have ten bucks worth of quarters in both our vehicles for car washing. And we save quarters in a tin to spend at garage sales. I’d be lost without having coins to fool with.

If you only use a debit card, how do you get so many coins?

(49,700 posts)Separate out the copper pennies, those 1980 and before. They might be worth something someday even if it is illegal to melt them. Do we worry about illegalities anymore?
You could ring the red kettle at Salvation Army Holiday time.
When you go to the bank, deposit a handful. They won't charge to count $1.73, but I heard some do for large amounts.
Go to a flea market. Those folks love cash.
I'm surprised that so many still use cash. I see them at the supermarkets.

(154 posts)I take them to the self checkout when I go shopping at Lowe's or the grocery store. Only during off peak hours though since I don't want to hold up the line feeding coins in the machine.

(383 posts)I've belonged to the North Island Credit Union at Naval Base Coronado for nearly 40 years. Never had a problem with them, no fees to access my money, and the customer service is great. I had problems with a debit card when I was in Las Vegas, a couple of years ago, and I called them and it turned out because I was using it outside of the county it wasn't working. The told me to do a Travel Notice and how to do it. Basically, I enter the dates I'll be away from home and what cities or states I'll be in. Then it will accept payments.

(41,975 posts)I went to Navy Basic in San Diego in the early 70s. Enjoyed Coronado but did not like driving over that bridge. Believe it or not there is a Navy Federal in Manhattan Kansas. Served with The Air Force the Summer of 96 in Saudi Arabia, Joint Task Force Southwest Asia. Stationed along the Gulf Coast and used the facilities at Keesler AFB, Biloxi. We also have some Accounts at Keesler Federal Credit Union. A belated welcome to DU.

(119 posts)Bank wont count coins anymore. I save the solid copper penies for the apocalypse. The rest i try to feed the register thing at the grocery store. I do not keep up on that well enough . I made Home Depot count 300.0$ worth out, legal tender ,Right?

(383 posts)I've collected coins since I was a kid so when it comes to converting the to paper money I'll take the time to sit and sort them by denomination and check to see if there are any interesting coins. I usually find a couple of Wheat pennies which I put with my rolls of Wheat pennies.
Now and then, when I pay cash and get change, I come across a silver dime or silver nickle. Not often but enough to make my day.

(17,118 posts)Way back, I would sort and roll the coins and take them to the bank.
Yeah, Coinstar skims a percentage, but the hassle isn't worth it especially since my coin-generation rate of transactions has decreased over time.

I have an old habit. If I drop a penny I leave it. If I find one on the ground I pick it up.

(20,429 posts)If the weight is too much, it can crack or break the base. Learned that the hard way.
I like to look through my change for coins that might be valuable. I still get a silver coin, or wheat pennies. I save the pure copper pennies (1982 and before) in case the scrap law changes
I usually wrap all of the coins when I have about $40. I've wrapped coins since I was a kid. Not a job I look forward to, but I don't do it often.
If you can donate them, I bet a food bank, humane society, or other local org. would be glad to have them

(16,773 posts)I'll even take the jar away at no charge. Heads up though. those copper Lincoln cents are worth 4 cents each at a reputable coin dealer. Pretty good ROI.

(279 posts)I would give each of my students a large piece of aluminum foil and ask them to make a boat that would hold pennies and float. They added pennies one at a time to see how many it would hold before capsizing. They could keep all the pennies it held. The kids that made flat barge type boats always had the most pennies.
I save up all my coins and give them out to my grandkids who like using them to play store with the shops they build with their legos.

(231,951 posts)When I was really little I'd hear him coming into my room at night and putting his day's change into my bank. And at the end of the week he'd roll up all his coins and when he'd get the chance he'd deposit them in the bank, said he was saving for college for me. But after the advent of bank drive thrus there was a problem. The cylinder he put his rolled coins into got stuck halfway, so the panicked bank teller fortunately managed to send it back to him, she wasn't sure that would work.

I go into town once a week ( its a 20 mile rt just to the nearest grocer) and i use plastic to buy stuff. I keep coins to scratch off the lottery tix i buy.
