I've used H&R Block programs for years and this year they changed their format. IMO, it wasn't as user friendly and past versions. So earlier this month I did my taxes, both federal and state, and as usual I set it aside to review later. I went into the hospital for two days with vertigo and I've been out for the last two weeks. Yesterday, I pulled up my tax return program, which was online, and reviewed it. When I originally completed it the program said there were no errors. This time it said I had some thing to review. It asked me for information I already entered and it was saying I owed almost twice the amount of taxes and when I first did it.
I decided to call the local H&R Block office and got an appointment that day. It took the tax preparer about 25 minutes to complete my returns. There was a big difference between what my original online program said I owed and what the preparer said I owed. The preparer saved me nearly $4,000 over what the online program said. Yeah, it cost me more to have the preparer do it over the online program but considering how much I saved it was well worth it.

(61,103 posts)I changed jobs in 2023, I left the company in a bind after they pissed me off and screwed me.
Incidentally, I turned 65 shortly after that, but did not apply for Social Security or pensions from previous companies until 2024. But for some reason the IRS is claiming I was drawing retirement benefits in 2023.
As near as I can figure, the business manager reported something to the IRS when I left the company. She was pissed the way I left because they needed my expertise.
I didn’t retire, I just took a better paying job at a company that was recruiting me.
So I have complied with everything the IRS has asked and still no return.

(8,172 posts)Same person we have had for years. It's well worth the 200 or so fee. In the event they make a mistake, they fix it and go to court or talk to IRS. We never had any issues.

(5,813 posts)But we’re retired with no complex issues. If you have more than W-2, 1099s, and Social Security, consider a CPA at least for one year to learn the ropes

(10,617 posts)I didn’t notice any change in format. I did the taxes in February, and got the refund nine days after we filed.

(26,415 posts)This is the 3rd year I've used their services. They're set up in several different locations in my county in Fl, libraries and church halls mostly.
No charge, made an appointment, was done in about 2 hours. I am not an AARP member, nor do they require you to be.
If this appeals to you goggle AARP Tax Preparation for your area.
Or Use this IRS web site to find free tax prep in your area.
