Why in spite of being terrified, the cast in a horror movie look for the monster. I was slicing bread to make a late breakfast, when a clatter arose, a loud noise, then 3 or 4 jangles. I about jumped out of my skin, but was already trying to figure out what the hell??? I was pretty sure it was in the kitchen, and saw the kitty was ok. She'd be begging for food if the roof caved in. Just in case, I looked up, and the ceiling and light were ok. Magnets and top of fridge ok. I finally looked behind a free-standing cabinet, and saw that my entire key rack had fallen off the wall. Major crash as it came down, bounced, and keys met gravity. What a jolt.
I won't need an EKG any time soon

(7,625 posts)So, at one time I created and ran (and participated in) a 'haunted attraction'. We ran for several nights, up to and including Halloween. That night, my little brother (a very jumpy and easily scared kid of 14 at the time) was home giving out candy because our mother, a nurse who worked the night shift, was already gone. I suppose it was around one a.m. when we finished up at the attraction and myself and a buddy drove home. We decided to try and scare my brother with one of the many masks I had in the car, settling on the 'Nosferatu' mask. As we approached my house, for some reason, we suddenly decided to instead go to my friend's house where his older brother was hanging out with his girlfriend for the evening and try to scare them.
After this, I drove home and as I approached the drive, I noticed that every single light in the house was on. Curious, I parked and went inside to find my little brother sitting in the living room with his shotgun across his knees. Fortunately, he had heard me come in and knew who it was. I asked him why he was sitting there with his shotgun. He told me that about two hours ago, he had been watching television when he had heard a loud bang. He did not know where exactly, but it was inside the house. Being who he is, he immediately ran outside, deciding that if the intruder was inside, he wanted to be outside. After some time had passed, he managed to steel himself enough to go back inside the house, grab his gun, and search the entire structure. He found nothing. So, he left all the lights on and returned to watching the TV, while hanging on to the weapon. That is how I found him once I got home.
I was puzzled, but decided that it must have been something outside and he was mistaken. I walked into my room, and then I saw what had happened. I used to have a chest of drawers with a big mirror. On the top of the drawers I had my stereo, with turntable, receiver, and mixer for microphones and so on. On the top of the mirror, I had several stuffed animals perched along the top edge. One of them had fallen and it must have perfectly landed on the cover of the turntable, which may have sounded like a big drum or maybe a door slamming? Whatever it may have sounded like, it obviously scared the hell out of my brother. (It is doubtful he would have noticed the animal had fallen, so it makes sense that he 'found nothing' in his search.) But, he managed to check the house anyway.
My friend and I still talk about the fact that we were going to go scare him before we mysteriously changed our minds.

(20,429 posts)When my kids were young, they stayed at their aunt's house pretty often, and there were several eerie events, including things missing, then turning up in plain sight, noises from empty rooms and so on. Once, my sister-in-law, her husband and I were out together. We stopped for a drink, and we started talking about their haunted house. My s-i-l mentioned that she thought their poltergeist had taken a blouse. It was bright red with batwing sleeves (remember those?) She said she'd looked all over the house and couldn't find it. Her husband muttered that the ghost didn't take it. My s-i-l insisted. He finally said, "It's in the back of my truck. I thought it was mine and wore it to work. The guys razzed me so much, I took it off and threw it in the truck." I still laugh.
I'm betting now that some of the things the kids told us were engineered by their older cousins. But at the time, we took all of their stories seriously, maybe till the shirt. lolol
