Watched "You've Got Mail" Christmas Eve. Question.

Something struck me. The opening credits sequence has this rendering of New York City that the camera travels through. Movie was made in 1998. And yet they have altered this opening sequence so that the new freedom tower is what is shown, rather than the World Trade Center. Why do they feel the need to do that? Like it’s gonna make us sad at the beginning of a romantic comedy to see the twin towers? It’s not as though watching the movie is gonna make us think it’s 2025. She uses a dial-up modem to get her mail on AOL, for goodness sakes. I wish they wouldn’t do this, and I’ve noticed it in other things too. To me, it’s jarring and makes it more noticeable. Thoughts?

But artists. They have quirks and odd impulses, especially those artists managing other’s art.

I’m very sympathetic to your complaint, but someone had the power to make such an awful decision. I’m certain they would argue it to both of us.

2. It was a heartwarming movie, but when it came out...

I hated it: I was left feeling like I just watched an advertisement for Starbucks, AOL, etc

But even then, I was thinking that in the years that follow those corporate advertisements would be an interesting part of history (for instance, AOL mail is no longer a major player). So my hate for it diminished.

Anyways. Moving on.

3. I watched When Harry Met Sally

the other night and was struck by one scene where the twin towers were visible in the background. So no alteration in that movie.
I haven't noticed the towers being replaced in other movies.

4. Oh that was done in all films after 9/11

They thought it would trigger people to remember the attacks.

7. It does make me sad to see the Twin Towers

but I think it's wrong to remove them from films. It's like whitewashing the past.

8. As a NYC'r who spent a year 80/81 on the 73rd flr of South Tower 2 it also makes me briefly sad. Wouldn't want it...

9. Tangential "You've Got Mail" story...

A thing I've done for many years in The Spring is visit the big pathway of Riverside Park (West edge of Manhattan ?135 St - 72nd St - Westside Highway next to it). I stroll, and sit on the benches a few blocks below the 72nd St entrance when the crabapple, and cherry trees are blossoming! So, so beautiful.

So I'm ready to do my walk, but am blocked off ftom the main path. Wth. Oh, there's a movie being filmed. I see the food catered carts.

Well, a year or so later I'm in the movie theater, and there's the characters walking though that section; trees all in bloom. Aha!
