I finally got my car keys fixed.

From 3 weeks ago
I changed the battery in my car key fob now it won't start with that key

I avoided going to a dealership.
I had an appointment with a guy 2+ weeks ago to come to my house. He said he could fix it. He probably couldn’t because it does need to be computer synced up. He was going to charge me $160. I called it off when he was 45 minutes late.

I called the locksmith operation that installed the locks when we bought our house they said sure just come bye. 30 minutes. The young lady at the counter was great. I think she ya know had a little “thing” for me but hell, how can she resist? 😉 Even on the day I turn 59.

So they cut a new cut, synced it to the car, and a new case for the spare (which I’ve been using for 3 weeks). It’s case had cracked. No amount of Lock Tite and tape stopped it from being loose and wobbly. Oh and I got the original key (no casing) that still unlocks the doors. She said I could zip tie it somewhere under the car in case of a lock out.

$171.58. Much less than I expected.

I keep a flat key spare that unlocks the doors (and starts car) in my wallet . I don’t drive without my wallet .
Have locked my keys in the car before , but not my wallet . I’d never leave a key outside the car where someone may look for it .

🤔

Do you think the "little thing" the young lady at the counter had for you was a key fob? That would make perfect sense!

It’s flattering but it’s just a force of nature that happens

I bought a 2026 Honda CR-v Sport Touring Hybrid two weeks ago. The fobs unlock the doors and if, for some reason, the fobs don't work I can press a button in the fobs and a key pulls out and opens the doors. If the fob battery is dead, all I have to do is hold the fob next to the Start Button. The Start Button will read the chip and start the car.

My previous car, a 2007 CR-v, had a fob that wouldn't work even with a new battery so I took it to a locksmith franchise (Busy Bees) and they cloned it with an identical Honda fob for $130.

The locksmith said it has to be computer synced up so those were never going to work.

Apparently many fobs have a physical key in them. They can start the car by turning them in the ignition that’s typically on the left side inside the glove box. I had no idea.
