(4,701 posts)There's an Indian ice cream shop near me "Pints of Joy" (Sunnyvale, CA) who have some very refreshingly different flavors, including an actual rum and raisin (for 21+ only) which is delicious.

(17,162 posts)Tiger Tail (or Tiger Tiger) is orange ice cream with ribbons of black licorice. I dislike licorice in general but the two play well off of each other.
I can't eat any of these any more, no dairy. Until now I was stuck with sorbets or vegan ice cream (not bad, just not a lot of flavours. Salted Caramel Cluster or Chocolate, I'd add fresh cherries or strawberries to the chocolate). But last year, I won a Ninja ice cream maker from a grocery store, so this year I'll try making goat's milk ice cream. A couple of years ago, there was a goat's milk lemon ice cream that was divine!
But...the health food store stopped selling it. I may try and recreate it.

(27,502 posts)My absolute favorite is newish at 2+ yrs and is a Gelato. Talenti's Double Dark Chocolate! It has a bit of vermouth which i don't like that much [ if only it was a touch of bourbon!😄 ] but it also has these tiny, intensity dark chocolate "shards". They're not even "chips" 😄 ! And it's a more intense chocolate over all. So I ignore the vermouth 😄 . But it's not always available, and l have to take a bus there (not super far away, but far enough).
Now if that's not available, and they have Talenti's Black Raspberry it has the same chocolate shards, and I like black raspberry.
Otherwise it's Ben & Jerry's Chocolate Therapy; New York Super Fudge Chunk, or Chocolate Brownie.
I do like butter pecan, Hagan Das's Vinilla with chocolate covered almonds in a pinch.
Most different for me was when Ben & Jerry introduced themselves to NYC w a festival in Central Park.
If you wrote some social activitist type postcards in the big tents they provided -you'd get a ticket which you could trade in for free ice cream. A good deal!
They had a ?sweet cream (or ?maaaybe vanilla ) ice cream w fresh cut peach pieces. Since I loved peaches it was delightful.
For several years they even had it at a certain time in their stores.

(3,941 posts)for me to finish the peaches and cream. Local supermarket had a buy one get one free on Tillamook. The restraint I showed was remarkable.
There was a dad with his young daughter loading their cart in front of me. I hope Mama likes ice cream and didn't send those 2 to the store to get tomato sauce.

(574 posts)Hudsonville Ice Cream makes some good ones. Traverse City Cherry Fudge, Mackinac Island Fudge, and Deer Traxx are some of my favorites. They also make an Orange Cream Swirl, which is vanilla ice cream swirled with orange sherbet, very good. Every summer they offer limited release flavors, usually something fruity, like blueberry crumble, or peach cobbler.

(2,264 posts)I really cant do dairy because Im generally vegan, and dairy makes me snot up for days (I already have perpetual hay fever, as well). However
if someone is rude enough to put some Publix Chocolate Trinity in front of me, Im going to snarf it. Dark chocolate upon chocolate upon chocolate.

(23,773 posts)He makes a mean vanilla too.
To make brandied fruit ice cream: cut up dried fruit into bits and soak it in brandy until the fruit has absorbed all the liquid. Spread the bits on a cookie sheet and freeze them ( does the same for strawberry ice cream)
Make the vanilla ice cream according to your preference (his recipe is a little heavier in butterfat than commercial and with as little sugar as possible). Churn the mix, and when it is almost ready, pour the frozen fruit bits into the churn and give it a couple or three more turns, enough to distribute it well in the mix.
We wipe the container down to remove the salt, and put it in our freezer. If we are taking it somewhere we can pack it in ice in a cooler, or dish it up into containers and take those in the cooler.
The best thing though is to make it at the party, especially if there are going to be some middle and high school aged boys. They will fight over getting to churn the mix. It is hilarious.
We gave some of the brandied fruit to some neighbors and their 5 year old son got into it.. he was drunk as a skunk.
