Does anybody know anything about Canadian laws about passports?

Many countries want your passport renewed at least six months before it expires. Is Canada one of them? Reason I ask is I'm going on a cruise to New England and Canada in October and my passport expires in February of next year. That's only four months. I tried looking it up online and couldn't find out anything about it.

I was going to put this post in the Canada forum but it says it's for Canadian DUers and I'm not Canadian.

Thank you in advance for any assistance or suggestions you can give me.

Sometimes it's just figuring out search terms. And avoiding AI summaries!

I am an American citizen. What do I need to enter Canada?

...And "proper identification" links here:

Not that I trust dot-gov sites very far these days, but this page says passport must be valid at time of entry, not anything like "plus six months past travel dates"

Bon voyage!

Maybe contact them?

Edited to add: Update your passport anyway, just to be on the safe side.

Both the US and Canada have 6 month tourist visas, meaning if you enter the country with less than six months on your passport, you could legally stay the limit, but then be stateless and forced to remain in the host country.

If you submit a renewal now, you should have your new passport before your trip in October.

The worst that could happen if you don’t is you could be refused entry to Canada and have to remain on your cruise ship.

I found a website that said there isn't a six-month rule in Canada for American citizens; that as long as your passport is valid on the day you arrive and valid on the day you leave, there isn't any problem. I will only be in Canada two days, but it might be best to not take any chances and renew my passport this coming week so I don't have to worry about it. Well, knowing me, I'll probably worry about how long it'll take to get it!

Thanks again!

A US passport does not need to be valid for 6 more months to enter Canada. Sometimes airlines might enforce this, but not Canadian border control.
If your cruise ends in the US, or if you have tickets onward from Canada back to the US, then your chances of any problem go down.
Definitely check with a Canadian government source though to verify!

as long as you leave prior to its expiry date. You can check with the Canadian Consulate or Border Security.
