Tag sale/church bazaar season is finally here and so are the Friday evening sales I hate. A couple of the churches have them and every year I vow not to go. But I do. The one that normally has the crummiest stuff was last Friday. I managed to talk my way in a little early since I didn't want to be there in the first place and was tired and wanted to go home. I made a rapid scan of the whole place and picked up a few things. Nothing jumped out at me, but since it was a "donations only" sale I took more chances on things. I was out of there in half an hour and home in time for dinner. I took my time investigating the items I picked up, but when I did I discovered one little vase was a Royal Bayreuth tapestry vase from the late 1800's and a wooden stick with a carved head was an old Penobscot Indian root club. Not the Picasso of my dreams, but a good investment on my donation. And I also bought an unopened jigsaw puzzle that looks like a can of Spam. LOL. I've decided to pick up funny stuff along the way and when my brother's birthday comes around put it all in a box for him and wrap it up. Next Friday is the better sale. Never give up.

From your post I gather it is an early bird entry with donations instead of prices marked. Is that correct? Do they charge admission?

2. No, it was a total donation sale and they had the doors open early and said I could come in.

A couple of the churches in my area do donation sales rather than pricing. They tell me they make more doing it that way than by pricing it individually. I know even if I don't find much of anything I always leave a decent donation, especially at the churches that are feeding people or have overnight shelters.

A local church here has a wonderful rummage sale in the fall. They ask those who donate items for sale to mark the items prior to leaving them. It's a huge project to mark everything, and the church saves a lot of manpower this way.

4. In my neck of the woods, Friday night church sales = pay $10 to get in early

Tomorrow night I'm going to one that starts at 5 p.m. and it's one of the more popular sales of the year. If you get in line past 3 p.m. you won't have a chance at anything. At least it's not supposed to rain. LOL. You wouldn't believe the line for this event. It extends a block. Sadly, after about 15 minutes the sale area is so crowded you can barely breathe and you really can't see much of anything.
