Sir Michael has previously indicated his intention to retire but has often been tempted back. But he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "I keep saying I'm going to retire. Well I am now." He added: "I've figured, I've had a picture where I've played the lead and had incredible reviews... What am I going to do that will beat this?"
The Great Escaper sees Sir Michael portray Bernie Jordan, a real-life World War Two veteran who made headlines in 2014 when he escaped from his care home to attend D-Day anniversary celebrations in France.

(7,395 posts)Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy.
His body of work far exceeds those 3 films though.
I remember watching a bunch of his movies in the 1980s and 1990s, and saw some he made in the 1970s.

(10,403 posts)I recall this quote from when he was asked about that film "I have never seen it, but by all accounts it is terrible. However, I have seen the house that it built, and it is terrific."
I have always I liked him and what an amazing career.

(415 posts)"A lot" of people don't remember him for BATMAN. Maybe people under 40. How about SLEUTH, or EDUCATING RITA, or THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING, or any of the many, many great films he's made over a lifetime in cinema? The man is a cinematic legend, as is the late but lovely and ever so talented Glenda Jackson. Caine and Jackson are Hollywood A-listers of the highest order.

(36,078 posts)... especially Sleuth and The Man Who Would Be King.
I saw Alfie on TV, not in the movie theater, so it was already on reruns. But it was quite a long time ago, and even then you could see that Michael Caine would become a big star.
In the Batman series, Caine was an important co-star since many of Christian Bale's revelatory scenes are between Bruce Wayne and Alfred.
