Trivia: In an interview, director Edward Bernds said that Zsa Zsa Gabor got very "testy" with the actresses playing the Venusian girls. They were mostly beauty contest winners, and were many years - and in some cases a few decades - younger than her. When she noticed that the crew was paying more attention to the tall, leggy, mini-skirted "Venusians" than they were to her, she became very difficult to work with. He said that Gabor gave producer Ben Schwalb such a hard time on the picture that Schwalb eventually wound up in the hospital with ulcers.

Trivia: Costumes worn by the ship's officers and Motiya and other props, such as some weapons and the belt radio with the retractable microphone, were re-used or copied from Forbidden Planet (1956). Much footage of the models, sets, and special effects are taken from World Without End (1956).

Trivia: Final film of Bela Lugosi, who died before the film was finished. Lugosi was doubled by Tom Mason, Wood's wife's chiropractor, who was significantly taller than Lugosi, and played the part with a cape covering his face.

Trivia: The actor playing the detective who points his gun at himself several times did it deliberately. The actor wanted to see if Edward D. Wood Jr. would notice. He didn't.

Trivia: According to Maila Nurmi (aka Vampira), she would put on her vampire makeup and costume at home and then take a bus to the Quality Studios soundstage where her scenes were filmed. Nurmi was paid $200 for her appearance in the film.

Trivia: If Robert Lowery's Batman costume seems a bit ill-fitting, it's because it was tailored for Kirk Alyn, a bigger man. Alyn starred as Superman in Superman (1948) and Atom Man vs. Superman (1950). Lowery had a terrible time trying to see out of the poorly designed Batman mask.

Trivia: In Chapter 1 police are summoned to a robbery on Ellsworth Ave. This is a nod to Whitney Ellsworth, an editor at DC comics. He was DC's "movie contact" and a consultant on all of its comic book-inspired serials.

Trivia: Vicki Vale was created in 1948, the year before the film. Artist Bob Kane based her on Marilyn Monroe, who he met at a Hollywood party. Vicki was a common character in the Batman comics until 1963, when the editors "cleaned house" on Batman's list of regular costars. She made a print comeback in 1977, and has sporadically waxed and waned in importance in that medium, as well as animated cartoons. Kim Basinger also played her in the film "Batman" (1989).

Trivia: During filming in June 1961, Karl Malden had to be rushed to hospital to have an emergency appendectomy.

Trivia: Cinerama was so expansive that it couldn't really be configured for close-ups. The nearest it could manage was to place a key actor in the central frame and try to get in as close as possible. This proved to be very intimidating for a lot of actors as the camera (an enormous piece of apparatus under a black hood with three lenses) would be literally in their face--18 inches away, to be precise.
