10:15 PM A New Leaf (1971)

&pp=ygUKYSBuZXcgbGVhZg%3D%3D

Henry Graham lives the life of a playboy. When his lawyer tells him one day that his lifestyle has consumed all his funds, he needs an idea to avoid climbing down the social ladder. So he intends to marry a rich woman and - murder her.
Dir: Elaine May Cast: Walter Matthau, Elaine May, Jack Weston
Runtime: 102 mins Genre: Comedy Rating: TV-G CC:

Trivia: The film as delivered by Elaine May was drastically re-cut and shortened ("butchered", according to some) by Paramount before its release. Sadly, neither the director's cut of the film nor the original shooting script has ever been made publicly available.

12:15 AM Mikey and Nicky (1976)

Nicky is on the run from the mob, and he turns to old pal Mikey for help.
Dir: Elaine May Cast: Peter Falk, John Cassavetes, Ned Beatty
Runtime: 106 mins Genre: Crime Rating: TV-MA CC:

Trivia: Elaine May shot 1,400,000 feet of film for the production. A two hour feature is just under 11,000. This was nearly three times the amount of film that was shot for Gone with the Wind (1939).

2:15 AM Ishtar (1987)

Two bad singers booked by a Moroccan hotel get mixed up in international politics.
Dir: Elaine May Cast: Dustin Hoffman, Paul Standig
Runtime: 105 mins Genre: Comedy Rating: TV-MA CC: N

Trivia: Warren Beatty and Elaine May quarreled and argued quite a bit off camera and especially in the editing room. Dustin Hoffman would serve as the mediator between the two of them. Beatty would also take sides against May in disagreements between her and director of photography Vittorio Storaro. At one point, Beatty and May had an argument with May telling Beatty, "You want this scene your way? You shoot it!", and May would abandon the set for long periods of time. Beatty then reported the incident to the Columbia Pictures production representative, who then offered to fire May as director of the film on Beatty's behalf as producer of the film, but Beatty did not want to take on responsibilities of directing the rest of the film himself had May been fired, and did not want to contradict himself as the whole point of the film was to give May the chance she never really had to show her talents as director. Beatty told Columbia, if they were to fire May, he and Hoffman would abandon the film entirely as well. In the end, May stayed on-board and ended up directing the entire film.

4:15 AM Kaleidoscope (1966)

A pretty girl lures a luckless gambler into a dangerous poker game.
Dir: Jack Smight Cast: Warren Beatty, Susannah York, Clive Revill

Trivia: Sandra Dee was cast as the female lead but was replaced. During pre-production in France, director Jack Smight had doubts she could play the role of the "British girl" the script called for, so she was paid off and Susannah York was cast instead, with the agreement of Jack L. Warner.

&pp=ygUPY2hpbGRyZW4ncyBob3Vy

Dir: William Wyler Cast: Audrey Hepburn, Shirley Maclaine, James Garner
Runtime: 107 mins Genre: Drama Rating: TV-PG CC: Y

Oscar nominations:
ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE -- Fay Bainter {"Mrs. Amelia Tilford"}
ART DIRECTION (Black-and-White) -- Art Direction: Fernando Carrere; Set Decoration: Edward G. Boyle
CINEMATOGRAPHY (Black-and-White) -- Franz F. Planer
COSTUME DESIGN (Black-and-White) -- Dorothy Jeakins
SOUND -- Samuel Goldwyn Studio Sound Department, Gordon E. Sawyer, Sound Director

Trivia: The original stage-play was partly inspired by an actual case in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1810. A pupil named Jane Cumming accused her schoolmistresses, Jane Pirie and Marianne Woods, of having an affair. Dame Cumming Gordon, the accuser's influential grandmother, advised her friends to remove their daughters from the boarding school. Within days the school was deserted and the two women had lost their livelihood. Pirie and Woods sued and eventually won, both in court and on appeal, but given the damage done to their lives, their victory was considered hollow.

Trivia: Veronica Cartwright (Rosalie) said in an interview that she and the other children were told not to hang around with Shirley MacLaine on set because she "cursed a lot". They all did, however, because they thought she was "cool" and "very generous". She also became Cartwright's mentor throughout the making of the film.

Trivia: William Wyler cut several scenes hinting at Martha's homosexuality for fear of not receiving the seal of approval from the Motion Picture Production Code. At the time, any story about homosexuality was forbidden by the production code.

4:30 AM Two Loves (1961)

A conservative teacher struggles with her values while teaching natives in New Zealand.
Dir: Charles Walters Cast: Shirley Maclaine, Laurence Harvey, Jack Hawkins
Runtime: 100 mins Genre: Romance Rating: TV-PG CC: Y

Trivia: Shirley MacLaine chose to do this film instead of Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961), something she was known to have regretted later. She did state though that the film wouldn't have been the same without Audrey Hepburn.
