The first 3 are from the first church set up in Funchal by the person who founded the city. It is largely painted and tiled. Very pretty. We got in to see it, it has been absorbed by a convent, to see a classical quartet.
The last three are from the Cathedral established there.
Cathedral.

(5,461 posts)Madiera is a Portuguese island west of Sfrica, about 360 miles. It lays about midway, longitudinally between Marakesh and Casablanca. The Azores are a small archipelago about even with Lisbon, further west. Also Portuguese. Portugal has one other group next to Africa near the equator, Sao tome und Principe, about even with Equatorial Guinea. The Canary islands are Spanish and south of Madeira.

(5,390 posts)I lived in the azores as a kid and it was so memorable and seems like it is still so.
Your images are stunning.
Did you travel there and spend time to photograph? Was it recently?
I dream of going back there one day.(azores)
When I was there it was quite medieval with more cattle carts than cars; Salazar was the dictator and he had an iron fist on the country and censored the news and communications.
It was a bucolic and placid life for the islanders. But that was so long ago.
I never forgot it; I hope the country and the islands remain intact with the landscape and cuisine earthy and undisturbed from outside influences.

(5,461 posts)For my birthday. First time. A couple of years ago we were on Gran Canaria for Mrs. Cranks bday. First 'German' vacation. We preferred Madeira. I always drag my camera along. Not sure when we may get to the Azores. A dog walking friend is heading there for a week very soon.
Thanks for the compliments on the pictures. Stay tuned. Last year we signed up for a trip to Rhodes, Greece, and Türkyie. I
The first week will be spent with a group lead by an antquitarian. It will be interesting to see how this tour is. Never done one but it was too cheap to resist. So there should be pictures in three weeks about.

(5,390 posts)Sounds great ! Munich must be interesting with a great tour guide. Thanks Old Crank I will remember that. I once went to Germany. It was the town where Gutenberg made a name for himself and I saw the first printing press. It was a quick business trip and I was exhausted but I managed to get out on my own but felt lost because of the lack of language skills.

(5,461 posts)Has managed to keep a somewhat separate identity for each of the little towns that were absorbed as it expanded. Sort of like NYC on a smaller scale.
Not knowing German, isn't as hard now. Until you get out of the cities.
