THOUSANDS of viewers signed a petition to get "ignorant" Wendy Williams fired after she mocked Joaquin Phoenix's cleft palette. Wendy, 55, has since apologized to Joaquin and the cleft community but nearly 45,000 people still want her to get the ax.
The controversial TV personality made the comments during the 'Hot Topics' segment of her show on January 7 where she used her finger to imitate a cleft lip. Joaquin was born with a "microform cleft" when the tissue making up the lip do not join together completely before birth.
Her comments did not go down well online and Wendy was slammed by celebrities like Cher and fans who demanded an apology. The Believe singer blasted Wendy for her actions with a photo of the TV star holding her lip, asking "does an apology make up for this?" Canadian American footballer Adam Bighill - was born with a cleft lip and so was his son Beau - also shared his frustration. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers player tweeted: "This is @WendyWilliams making fun of the cleft community on her TV show. "Are you kidding me??? We all have a responsibility to #EndBullying," prompting an emphatic response from Wendy.
Wendy Williams:
"I want to apologize to the cleft community and in Beaus honor, our show is donating donating to @operationsmile and @AmerCleftPalate.
[We] encourage our Wendy Watchers to learn more and help support the cleft community," her statement continued.
