Glendale asks state Supreme Court to decide whether hotel wage act qualifies for ballot
Glendale is continuing to challenge a measures placement on the November ballot that seeks to give hospitality workers a $20-an-hour minimum wage.
The city has petitioned the Arizona Supreme Court to decide whether the voter initiative violates the state constitutions so-called single-subject rule. Lower courts have said it doesnt, and the city is taking one last swing at the issue.
The request comes as the countys ballots for the Nov. 5 elections are already being printed, meaning a decision in the citys favor could nullify thousands of votes cast for Proposition 499.
Worker Power is the labor union backing Proposition 499, formally called the Hotel and Event Center Minimum Wage Protection Act. The group wants to set the hourly minimum wage for hotel and event center workers at $20, about $6 more than the statewide minimum.
