Maricopa County Supervisors chair throws support behind Democrat after GOP primary loss

Maricopa County Supervisor Jack Sellers wants voters to back a Democrat over the Republican who defeated him in his primary election earlier this year.

Sellers, a Republican, is endorsing Democrat Joel Navarro in his race against Republican Mark Stewart for the District 1 seat representing the southeast Valley.

The district, which stretches from Tempe to Queen Creek, encompasses some of the most prosperous areas of the county. It leans conservative, but it is also home to many business-friendly, education-friendly Republicans who have played a pivotal role in recent elections and have shown a willingness to split their tickets.

Democrats believe the seat is winnable. Sellers' backing could come into play as they look to secure a long-sought-after majority on the influential board, which oversees the county's budget, election administration and land use issues.
