Desert Healthcare votes to put lease agreement on November ballot; voters to decide fate

The Desert Healthcare District board voted Tuesday night to put Tenet Health's 30-year lease purchase agreement for Desert Regional Medical Center on the November ballot, bringing to end a nearly year-long negotiation process between the two entities.

The board voted 6-1, with Director Kimberly Barraza voting no. Coachella Valley voters will now decide whether to approve or reject the lease agreement on Election Day on Nov. 5.

If it's approved by voters, Tenet and the district would enter into a new lease agreement on Dec. 1. The new lease would commence on May 31, 2027, and end May 21, 2057. The current lease between Tenet and the district expires May 30, 2027.

The proposed lease is between Tenet and the hospital's owner, the Desert Healthcare District, a public agency run by an elected board. The agreement is available to read at www.dhcd.org.
