4. Yup... But many of us--especially in the West--deal with this kind of absolute ignorance toward animals

--especially wildlife from ignorant people constantly. To put a toddler on the back of a wild bison in Yellowstone for your photo? Let your 2 yo. stick their hand and feet in a near-boiling hot spring? Try to approach a rutting bull elk in Rocky Mtn. Nt. Park? Honestly. Even the way some approach dogs they don't know is incredible. And seemingly increasing. Maybe it has always been a problem at this level, but it certainly seems like this total lack of common sense toward animal interactions is increasing.

6. Decades ago, a couple who later became my friends hitched their way across Canada.

While going through the Rockies, the female half of the couple thought a couple of bear cubs was too good a photo op to pass up, so she took her camera and raced towards the cubs. Fortunately for her, her husband was a much faster runner, and managed to overtake her before she was shredded.

Certainly the dumbest near-interaction that I know of personally.

2. I enjoy hiking in that area. If the horse ran off among those cliffs and trails, it couldn've been tragic,

for both rider and horse.
