Connecticut public schools must now teach about climate change

A new state law is behind the curriculum requirement.

This year, Connecticut public schools will be required to teach students about human-caused climate change. It will be taught as part of their regular science curriculum.

“And it does not get to be a victim of a budget cut or a conservative local board of ed that might think climate change is a hoax, because I’ve certainly heard that,” says state representative Christine Palm.

Palm is vice chair of the environment committee of the Connecticut General Assembly. She worked for years to pass legislation to require the curriculum change.

She says she was motivated in part by the urgency that many young people feel about solving the climate crisis.

1. Connecticut adopted NGSS a long time ago. Climate in curriculum since 2015

CT adopted the next generation science standards, NGSS, in about 2015. Transition to them fully by about 2018, so climate change has been part of the official curriculum since then.

All but a handful of states adopted NGSS (Mississippi, Texas, north Carolina) do climate change is taught in almost every state

A couple of states watered down or eliminated parts of the ESS3 strand about human causes of change in climate but CT was not one of those, which were the usual red state suspects like WV and ND.
