Malloy: Enfield Correctional Institution Will Close Next Year

The Enfield Correctional Institution will be shuttered early next year and its 700 inmates will be transferred to other prisons in the state, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy announced Tuesday.

Malloy said the move will save the state $6.5 million annually. He attributed the closing to a declining prison population and crime rate in Connecticut that is at “its lowest level in two generations.”

“New prison admissions have declined 38 percent over the last 10 years and the prison population has reached its lowest level in 23 years,” the governor said in a written statement.

The medium-security facility on Shaker Road in Enfield opened in 1962 and is located near several other correctional facilities in town.
