Sarasota Republican Congressman Greg Steube announced he will file legislation to abolish the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), which has become a recent target by tech magnate Elon Musk in his effort to personally remake the federal government under the Trump Administration.
“Instead of benefitting American taxpayers who fund these programs, USAID’s initiatives often push progressive social agendas that are out of touch with the values and interests of our nation,” Stuebe said in a statement Wednesday.
The congressman also claimed that USAID-funded projects “undermine American sovereignty and security priorities,” but did not say what those were.
In an email to the Herald-Tribune on Thursday, the congressman’s office specified several programs Steube contested. Some were frivolous, such as a grant of about $70,000 for a “DEI opera in Ireland” or $1.5 million “to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in Serbia’s workplaces and businesses communities.” Others were deeper, such as the nearly $11 million from USAID and other organizations that the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction had found benefitted the Taliban government.
