Pinellas County school district officials reiterated on Thursday that they will cooperate with federal immigration enforcement efforts but will not have their police force participate in the effort.
The announcement came after word spread into the community following a report that Pinellas County Schools Police Chief Luke Williams had signed an agreement that would have had his officers enforce some aspects of the White House push to identify and detain immigrants without legal status.
The news was first reported by Florida Phoenix, causing a stir among community leaders who quickly rose up on social media to declare their opposition to the idea.
The district is not obligated to participate in training, the statement continued, and it has no plans to send anyone to the sessions or to perform any functions of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
