First payments made to workers owed back step raises
Some of the back wages owed to unionized state employees have started to be paid, but much more still hinges on the comptroller’s office getting payroll information from state agencies.
Comptroller Susana Mendoza’s office said it has sent out the first of the payments due to thousands of union employees who were denied step raises during the term of former Gov. Bruce Rauner.
Mendoza’s office said about $4.7 million has been processed out of the $300 million to $400 million that is owed to workers. The bulk of the initial payments was for money owed to workers at the Department of Healthcare and Family Services. Other payments went to the state Lottery, Illinois Arts Council and the Illinois Workers Compensation Commission.
Who gets the money is determined by how quickly state agencies send information to Mendoza’s office stipulating who should be paid how much money.
