Democratic group under voter fraud investigation in Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A Democratic-aligned group at the center of an Indiana investigation into possible voter fraud says it is focused on registering black voters because the state had the nation's lowest overall turnout in the 2014 election.

Patriot Majority USA president Craig Varoga told The Associated Press in an interview Thursday that the group focused solely on Indiana this year and began registering black voters in May.

It had collected 45,000 voter registration applications by the time Indiana State Police raided the group's Indianapolis office on Oct. 4. State Police say their investigation is focusing on possible forgeries of signatures.

Varoga says Indiana's voter database is a mess and the Republican Secretary of State Connie Lawson is trying to interfere with a legal voter registration effort.

Indiana Democrats are accusing Indiana Secretary of State Connie Lawson of playing partisan games and using “inflammatory rhetoric” when she alleged thousands of cases of voter registration discrepancies in Indiana could be voter fraud.

Earlier this week, Lawson said her office had found thousands of instances where names and birth dates don’t match up with what voters have provided to individual county clerks. The Indiana Democratic Party is crying foul after Lawson, a Republican, failed to release the exact number or where those cases of potential fraud occurred.

Party spokesman Drew Anderson said with high-profile races in Indiana and with Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump claiming the national election is rigged, Lawson using a term like “voter fraud” without proof that fraud has actually occurred reeks of partisan politics.

“It should be the duty of our elected officials to calm the waters ahead of what is sure to be a very vigorous election,” Anderson said at a Thursday news conference. “Instead … Lawson rushed to judgment without apparently knowing all the facts or without doing her homework.”
