Deacon hurt in Hammond church building explosion

HAMMOND — At least one person suffered burns after an explosion at a church building Monday evening.

Officials said it appears a gas explosion took place at about 6 p.m. at 816 Wilcox St.

The building is owned by Bethel Congregational Church which is just south of the building. Hammond Fire Chief Jeff Smith said a deacon of the church, who has not yet been identified, arrived to get the building ready for a meeting and smelled gas. While the deacon was checking the building "something blew up," Smith said.

Smith said the deacon was hospitalized and was conscious and alert with some burns to his hands.
