Ball State sends alert of gunman, quickly cancels

MUNCIE — A certain level of panic erupted on the Ball State University campus Wednesday afternoon before the all-clear was given after about 20 minutes.

At about 2:10 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, the Twitter account Ball State Alert tweeted, "Shelter in place. Possible armed suspect on campus." Shortly after, a second tweet said, "A male suspect wearing all black with a green bandanna sighted carrying a long rifle near Bracken and Woodworth. Continue to shelter in place."

Twenty minutes after that, a tweet from the same account announced an all-clear and said to resume normal activities.

Muncie Police Chief Joe Winkle said he was informed that the incident was a case of a zombie-type game on campus being misinterpreted.
