2 students dead, teacher injured in shooting at Iowa school program founded by rapper

Two students were killed Monday and a teacher was injured in what police said was a targeted shooting at a Des Moines school that is dedicated to helping at-risk youth, and three suspects were arrested afterward.

The shooting was at an educational program called Starts Right Here that is affiliated with the Des Moines school district.

Police say emergency crews were called to the school, which is in a business park, just before 1 p.m. Officers arrived to find two students critically injured, and they started CPR immediately. The two students died at a hospital. The teacher who was injured is in serious condition and headed into surgery Monday afternoon.

I was talking to an old building inspector today. He grew up on the eastern shore of Maryland and in junior high and high-school, he and some of his classmates would take their shotguns or deer rifles, depending on what game was in season, with ammunition to school, secure all of it in the principals office, so they could go hunting after school. Of course this was back in the 60's and 70's. That would be unfathomable today.

DES MOINES, Iowa —
Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie confirmed on Monday that activist and rapper Will Keeps was injured during a deadly shooting at Starts Right Here in Des Moines.

The shooting was reported at 12:35 p.m. Monday at Starts Right Here, a nonprofit organization focused on helping at-risk youth. Starts Right Here was created by Keeps. The organization started a partnership with Des Moines Public Schools in 2021.

According to police, two students were taken to the hospital with critical injuries. They have since died. Keeps was transported to the hospital in serious condition. Keeps was taken into surgery on Monday afternoon.
